Yes, =Artemis= magazine's issue #1 is at the printer and should be available shortly. Warren Lapine, publisher of DNA Publications says, "As you know, Ian Strock has been threatening to publish a magazine for a number of years. Recently, he began production of the first issue. He approached me for advice and such, ultimately I've agreed to take =Artemis= to the distributors under the DNA Publications contracts and do the print brokering for him. I just shipped the first issue of to my printer today. =Artemis= #1 will be out in time for Readercon. Ian did a great job with it. Stan Schmidt and Joe Lazzaro are some of the contributors. Now would probably be a great time to try a story out on him." Ian Randal Strock, editor, says, "I am paying 3-5 cents a word; the magazine is selling for $4.95 an issue (or a 4-issue subscription for $15). Looking for fiction and science. Address for mss. is: Ian Randal Strock, Editor Artemis Magazine 1380 East 17 Street, Suite 201 Brooklyn, NY 11230-6011 USA "Guidelines are posted on our web site at http://www. LRCPublications.com (warning: haven't had a chance to update the site recently--first we had a server move, and then I was getting the first issue out the door--so I'll be posting updates there over the next few days)." [sff.publishing.news, 17 & 18 June 99] =Avon Books= News Corporation Ltd. will expand HarperCollins with the purchase of Avon Books from the Hearst Corporation. The Hearst book units, William Morrow and Avon Books, according to Publishers Weekly, will be integrated into News's HarperCollins publishing subsidiary and will form the nation's second largest trade publisher with worldwide revenues of more than $900 million. The deal, which must still be approved by the government, is expected to close in July. HC president Jane Friedman was quoted as saying that it was too early to say how the Morrow and Avon imprints will be integrated into HC, although she noted that "our strengths mesh well." The merger will unite two of the country's largest children's publishers, and the addition of Avon will give a boost to HC's mass market paperback efforts. Jean Naggar, president of the Association of Authors' Representatives, said the impact on authors and agents would depend on what kind of consolidation took place, "but it looks as if it's a further shrinkage of the market." She also observed that during such upheavals, "editors become concerned and disturbed, and that slows down everything." [DarkEcho, 24 Jun 99] I don't know if this is related or not, but Jennifer Brehl was promoted to executive editor at Avon Eos and senior editor at Avon Books. [GQGM #100] =Cemetery Dance Publications= Richard Chizmar, publisher of Cemetery Dance Publications, has announced a new website at http://www.cemeterydance.com to debut July 17. He calls the new site "extremely comprehensive . . . The site also has a "secure" order form for direct credit card orders. [DarkEcho 1 July 99] =Dead, Missing and Ceased Publication= =The Gila Queen's Guide to Markets= (#100) lists the following markets as dead: =Audio Version=, =Bardic Runes=, =Fantastic Worlds=, =Frightmares=, =Avesta Blues Publishing=, =Housewife-Forum=, =Through Darkling Glass=, =White Knuckles= and =Wicked Mystic=. =Eternity Online= The webzine =Eternity Online= is currently closed to submissions. Editor Steve Algieri has an 80-story inventory and won't get them all online until the end of next year. Will open again in early 2000 after he reads all the "Best of Web" submissions, which is also closed until January 2000. [DarkEcho, 24 June 99] =Shiver, the Magazine for Active Mends Bent on Twisting Others= =Shiver= is folding after its 5th issue. All stories accepted for =Shiver 6= will be paid for and all rights revert to the writers. [GQGM #100] BEWARE! Anyone who has a website with Yahoo should be aware that Yahoo is now claiming perpetual non-exclusive rights to re-use, in any format, all material posted on their web sites. The wording in their terms of agreement is: "8. CONTENT SUBMITTED TO YAHOO By submitting Content to any Yahoo property, you automatically grant, or warrant that the owner of such Content has expressly granted, Yahoo the royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sublicensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed." The entire document may be found online at: http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/ Since GeoCities is part of Yahoo, their websites are included in this rights grab. Many writers have been deleting their entire sites (some have left only a nastygram vilifying Yahoo for this practice) and getting a new provider because of this. Anyone agreeing to this is losing rights to anything they have posted on their websites on Yahoo or GeoCities. Run Away! ==End of CALLIHOO newsletter for 6 July 1999==
