This is a quarterly E-magazine distributed in Acrobat PDF format. WRITING SEMINAR Ken Rand's writing seminar, held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m on Saturday, June 8, 2002, was a big success. Ken helped the writers involved discover what was keeping them from writing as much as they'd like, discussed how to get a good story idea in 90 seconds, went over the editing/rewriting precepts found in his book =The 10% Solution=, and discussed marketing your writing. I think all participants left the seminar energize, ready and excited to write. I know I did! Good work, Ken. ----------------------------------------------------------------- DEADLINES Check out the CALLIHOO website, listed above, for more information on these contests, magazine issues, and anthologies. Box 707 Renton, WA 98057-0707 You Could Create Our New Fantasy Setting! Wizards of the Coast, Inc. is soliciting proposals for a new fantasy setting ("Fantasy Setting Search"). This new world may be used as a setting for novels, roleplaying games, card games, miniatures, and other entertainment products. In scope and flavor, your proposed fantasy setting should be similar to our existing settings, particularly Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. The Process Please note that the Fantasy Setting Search is open only to individuals eighteen (18) years of age and older. If you are under the age of eighteen (18), your parent or guardian must complete the Idea Submission Agreement, in which case the parent or guardian takes full responsibility for all obligations under the Agreement. First-Round -- One (1) Page Proposals All initial proposals must: 1. be covered with a signed, unmodified copy of the Idea Submission Agreement; 2. include an accompanying cover letter with contact information; 3. be structured in accord with the initial proposal template; 4. be no more than one (1) page in length; 5. be postmarked no later than June 21, 2002. Initial proposals that are longer than one page or that don't meet any of the other requirements will be automatically rejected. All initial proposals that meet the listed requirements will be reviewed blindly (that is, without authors' names attached) by a panel of Wizards experts. The panel will select up to ten entries that it judges to be the best. The authors of those proposals will be invited to submit an expanded, ten-page description. Those requests will be sent to the authors no later than July 3, 2002. Second-Round -- Ten (10) Page Proposals Should your setting be chosen as one of the approximately ten (10) settings Wizards would like to see developed, you will be asked to expand your proposal to ten (10) pages. This expanded proposal must be postmarked no later than July 31, 2002. The ten-page treatments will then be reviewed a second time, and a maximum of three entrants will be given the green light to really develop their ideas. Those three, finalist authors will be notified of their selection for third-round consideration by August 5, 2002. Third-Round -- One-Hundred (100) Page Setting Bibles Should your setting be chosen as one of the approximately three (3) settings Wizards would like to see further expanded, you will be notified and requested to expand your ten-page treatment into a one-hundred (100) page setting bible. That's a lot of work, and you won't be expected to do it for free. These finalists will be awarded a one-time development fee of twenty thousand dollars ($20,000). All work submitted at this point shall be the sole property of Wizards and entrants will be required to execute an agreement to that effect with Wizards prior to payment. Ten thousand dollars ($10,000) will be awarded upon execution of a work-for-hire agreement with Wizards. The final ten thousand dollars ($10,000) will be awarded upon actual submission of the 100-page setting bible. The panel will review those final submissions and select the best one. A one-time consulting fee of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) will be awarded to the final entrant. Further, future preferential consideration may be given to the final entrant in assigning development or authorship of game product, novels, and other related material. Mail all proposals to: New Setting Proposals, Wizards of the Coast Publishing, P.O. Box 707, Renton, WA 98057-0707 Be sure to get a copy of the Idea Submission Agreement and the Initial Proposal Template. Susan Burmeister-Brown and Linda Burmeister Davies, editors [E-mail dated 4 June 2002] ----------------------------------------------------------------- MARKET GUIDELINES DREAMS OF DECADENCE, VAMPIRE POETRY AND FICTION [Print mag, vampire fic 1,000-15,000 wds. Pays 1-5 cents/wd. on pub. Generally no reprints. No e-mail subs. Sim subs okay if noted.] Editor: Angela Kessler Dreams of Decadence P.O. Box 2988, Radford VA 24143-2988 http://www.dnapublications.com/dreams/index.htm Vampire poetry up to 2 pages and vampire fiction 1k 15k words. Pays 1-5 cents/word on publication for FNASR for original fiction. In general, reprints will be considered on a for-copy basis and only if last published at least two years ago. Looking for atmospheric, well-written stories. The emphasis is on dark fantasy rather than horror. Vampires may be either protagonists or villains, but in either case characters should be well-developed. We want to see original ideas and story concepts, not rehashes. I like stories that take the traditional concept of the vampire into new territory, or offer a new perspective. I like elegantly-crafted, poetic prose with a Gothic feel, but remember: stories do need well-developed characters and plot no matter how lovely the writing style may be. I do NOT want to see any more stories about posers or wanna-be's; Dracula (historical or Stoker's); vampire monks/priests; or Jesus Christ, Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny as vampires. The following are NOT STORIES; please do not send them to me: Someone becomes a vampire; Vampire feeds; Vampire gets laid; Vampire gets staked. If that is all that happens in your story, this is NOT the market for it. It is okay for any of those things to happen in a story, but none of those is a sufficient plot. "Vampire feeds" is equivalent to "Someone eats a hamburger": It happens all the time, but it doesn't make much of a story. Looking for all forms of poetry, up to 2 pages in length; however, the less horrific and the more explicitly vampiric a poem is, the more likely it is to be accepted. I do not buy horror poetry. Poetry payment: $3.00 per short poem, $5.00 per longer poem, $20.00 for featured poet. Simultaneous subs ok if so noted. Sample $5. Send submissions to:P.O. Box 2988, Radford VA 24143-2988. No e-mail subs. Please mark clearly as being for =Dreams of Decadence=. Include cover letter.] Ed McFadden, editor PO Box 329 Brightwaters, NY 11718-0329 http://www.dnapublications.com/fantastic/index.htm =Fantastic Stories= is a full size, quarterly fantasy and science fiction magazine. Each issue has a full color glossy cover and is filled with imaginative stories, poetry, interviews and art, by professional and small press writers. =Fantastic Stories= features fantasy and science fiction in all their forms. While elements in the story must be SF/F oriented, mixing genres is permissible (e.g., an SF Mystery.) All stories must be well written, factually correct and, of course, entertaining. Stories should be entirely fictional; do not send stories based on actual events. 2,000 to 15,000 words; average is 4,000 to 5,000 words. Payment is 1 to 5 cents per word for First North American Serial Rights. POETRY: All forms and styles, 3-20 lines, within the stated genres; payment up to $1 per line for First North American Serial Rights. ART: =Fantastic Stories= is always in need of good art. Send B&W samples for interior and color photocopied samples for cover work. Payment for interior and cover art is negotiated with each artist. Follow standard manuscript format; manuscripts with type smaller than 12 point will be returned unread; submissions without a self-addressed stamped envelope (with IRCs for international submissions) will be destroyed unread. Do not send rewrites unless they are specifically requested. Response time is 1-2 months. Include cover letter w/credits. Sample $5. Send submissions to: PO Box 329, Brightwaters NY 11718-0329. No e-mail subs. [http://www.dnapublications.com/info/guide.htm#pw] ----------------------------------------------------------------- MARKET INFORMATION ALCHEMY Editor/small press publisher Steve Pasechnick (from Edgewood Press, which published the Tiptree Award anthology =Flying Cups and Saucers=): "I'm starting a fantasy magazine, =Alchemy=. I'm looking for stories up to 8,000 words and I'm paying five cents per word; tell everyone you think would be interested." Steve Pasechnick, P. O. Box 380264, Cambridge, MA 02238 FULL UNIT HOOKUP Mark Rudolph, editor of =Full Unit Hookup=, said, "=Full Unit Hookup= issue #2 is almost full, but there's still room for a short story or two. Issue #3 has plenty of space left. I've caught up on submissions, so if there's something you've been planning to submit, now may be a good time. "Check out the FUHU writers' guidelines at http://members.aol.com/fullunithookup/guidelines.html for more information. "In other news, =Tangent Online= has posted a strong review of the first issue, and it looks as if they'll be reviewing FUHU regularly. Incentive enough? "I want to apologize for the long response times recently. In March and April, FUHU was listed in a couple of market news letters and I was receiving between 8 and 10 stories a day. Submissions have finally dropped to a manageable level." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291, 10 Jun 2002] IMAGININGS Keith R. A. DeCandido, editor of the =Imaginings= anthology, says, "The date is received by, not postmarked. And yes, I'm buried in slush..... *grin*" [sff.publishing.albe-shiloh, 11 Jun 2002] LEGENDS Trevor Denyer , editor of British magazines =Legend and Roadworks=, said, "=Legend= pays only in contributors copies at the moment. I also edit =Roadworks=, which is now a paying market. Check out the NEW website at: www.roadworks- legend.co.uk" [E-mail dated 6 Jun 2002] SHOCKLINES A writer on the =Speculations= Rumor Mill said, "Those who submitted to the =Shocklines= anthology may have a lengthy wait. At the Stoker weekend, Matt Schwartz mentioned that he received nearly 1500 submissions and has only read a small fraction of them so far. His daily reading schedule went off the rails around Christmas. So the info on the guidelines about responding within 2 or 3 months of the April 1st deadline is out the window." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291, 10 June 2002] WICKED HOLLOW Jon Hodges, editor of =Wicked Hollow=, said, "=Wicked Hollow=, the pocket-sized magazine of horror from Blindside Publishing, is now a paying market. "Whereas compensation used to be three copies of the issue in which you were to appear and a three-issue subscription beginning with the issue in which you appeared, compensation is now $5 for fiction and $2 for poetry, and one copy. Payment is upon publication. "Also, I don't have all the details on this right yet, but beginning in 2003 =Wicked Hollow= will be publishing an annual supplement of a novelette. It will be called =Wicked Gluttony=. All I can tell you right now is I will be looking for long fiction of 12 - 20k words. The same kind of stories that would be considered for =Wicked Hollow= will be considered for =Wicked Gluttony=. There will be a payment plus royalties but I haven't set them in concrete yet so I won't yet mention them here. I'm not officially open yet to novelette submissions, but I'll post again when I am. It'll probably be relatively soon, depending on how soon I can get the website updated to reflect the supplement and set all the details permanently.
