"I've just sent an email to someone that says: 'This isn't my kind of thing at all, but I loved it so I want to buy it.' Or words to that effect. (It was a folklore/fairy tale based piece of fantasy, though not a retelling)." [sff.publishing.3sfmagazine, 10 Dec 02] Ms. Holliday continued, "This isn't a slush report as such, because I'm just going through doing some organisational stuff and pulling out anything that looks particularly interesting... "But just out of interest I have found: "A very badly formatted story from someone I remember explaining ms format to in some detail when I was doing =Odyssey=. "A submission from a US author with no email address but a large envelope and lots of *US* stamps for its return--which wouldn't bother me unduly except that in the last great readathon, I sent her a reply at my own expense explaining that US stamps don't work in the UK. "The story with the title that's a play on 'Little Green Men' that is traditional in every slush-a-thon I've ever done. "The story with no apostrophes. "The story from a complete beginner in eight point arial single spaced (I'll be kind--he says it's his first submission anywhere, and he hasn't given an email address so perhaps he hasn't seen the guidelines). "Several other badly formatted stories. "The one that starts with someone committing suicide. "The one about someone in a mental hospital. "And so on." [sff.publishing.3sfmagazine, 10 Dec 02] ALCHEMY Steve Pasechnick, editor of =Alchemy= magazine, said, "The first issue's contents are set. In no particular order: "There'll Always Be Another Me" by R. A. Lafferty "Lily, With Clouds" by Theodora Goss "The Fall at Shanghai" by Alex Irvine "Sand Dollars and Apple Halves" by Barth Anderson "Lightning" by Carol Emshwiller "A Beggar in Shadow" by Holly Phillips "Long Juju Man" by Nnnedi Okorafor "The Wall of Clouds" by Sarah Monette "I'll let you know more when I know more." [sff.publishing.news, 10 Dec 02] ALL HALLOWS' EVE ANTHOLOGY A writer on the =Speculations= Rumor Mill said, "News has come down that the =All Hallows' Eve= antho is cancelled. . . ." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=14263&sh ow_all_topics=0, 8 Dec 02] ARTEMIS Ian Randal Strock, editor of =Artemis= magazine, said, "For those who are wondering, I've read and responded to about 250 manuscripts in the past week (some of the responses are still here, and will go to the post office tomorrow). The stack is getting down to manageable size." [sff.publishing.artemismagazine, 8 Dec 02] CHIAROSCURO A writer on the Rumor Mill said he received a very useful and quick rejection from =Chiaroscuro='s new fiction editor, Paul Tremblay. [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=14263&sh ow_all_topics=0, 8 Dec 02] NFG A writer on the Rumor Mill said, "The first issue of =NFG= is out, for those of you who were wondering if it was ever going to happen (and I *still* never saw my proofs, but that's okay). Check out their website: http://www.nfg.ca/" [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 10 Dec 02] RAZOR MAGAZINE A writer on sff.net says that =Razor Magazine= doesn't take stories with magic realism in them. [sff.writing.response-times, 12 Dec 02] REALMS OF FANTASY When asked how big a "batch" of stories she usually gets from editor Shawna McCarthy, Carina Gonzalez, Assistant Editor for =Realms of Fantasy=, said, "Well, how many I get in a batch depends on how long it takes me to get down there to pick them up. I try to go at least once a month, and that generates two mailbox crates full--around 150 to 200 stories. If it's a month and a half, which has been more of the norm so far due to all of the holidays, it's usually three crates. "I've recently signed on some extra help though, so going through them won't entirely be on my shoulders anymore. Those that my helper deems worthy enough to pass onto Ms. McCarthy ARE STILL GOING TO HAVE TO GET THROUGH ME!" [sff.publishing.realms-of-fantasy, 10 Dec 02] A writer on sff.net asked, "What percentage, on average, get passed on to Shawna?" Ms. Gonzalez answered, "Hmmm...let's see. Well, in a slush of about 200 maybe 10 to 15 are actually seen by Shawna, so that's what...5-8%? In all, it's probably around 10% because all Clarion grads get in too, and there are actually a lot of them. Hope that gives you a good idea." [sff.publishing.realms-of-fantasy, 12 Dec 02] TALES OF THE UNANTICIPATED A writer on the Rumor Mill said, "I was at a reading last night hosted by =Tales of the Unanticipated= editor, Eric Heideman, last night. I saw what's left of the submissions, as he had all of them with him to work on. There are 50-ish left. Eric and the other staff are working on making final decisions and compiling feedback for those stories they aren't accepting at this point." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 11 Dec 02] WICKED GLUTTONY Jon Hodges, editor of =Wicked Gluttony=, said, "Shawn James's "Forever Lovers" was selected for this year's =Gluttony= pretty soon after I opened to submissions. The rest are being considered for Nov. 2003, then I will be closing to =Gluttony= submissions until winter 2003, when I'll begin reading for 2004. It's taken me longer than I'd intended to read =Gluttony= submissions, but I hope to get at least a majority of them read by the new year. Terribly sorry for the delay to you and anyone else waiting to hear back on a =Gluttony= submission. Some of the waits involved are inexcusable." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 9 Dec 02] WICKED LITTLE GIRLS Christina Sng, editor of =Wicked Little Girls=, said, "I've cleared all of the =Wicked Little Girls= subs save for those I am saving for further consideration. If you haven't heard from me please feel free to query. "The deadline for =WLG= has been extended till further notice, so keep those subs coming."
