Pays 3 cents/wd. E- mail subs okay.] Grimoire P.O. Box 806 Bristol, R.I. 02809 grim_ed@yahoo.com http://www.angelfire.com/comics/excaliberpres/grim.html =Grimoire= is a magazine devoted to the classic =Weird Tales= type of horror story. Within its pages, you will find many stories of weirdness and terror. =Grimoire= celebrates the type of story that relies on intelligence and subtlety rather than blood and gore. Every issue will present some of the best new talent in horror writing as well as examples of some classics in horror literature. Not to mention articles and columns on what's new in the horror field (in books, comics, film and tv)! So give us a try and find the new place for terror! So you want to submit to =Grimoire=? Great! We'd love to have your work in our magazine. But, as with every magazine, there are some guidelines we'd like you to keep in mind. =Grimoire, The Magazine of Haunting Terror=, is a magazine in the =Weird Tales= tradition. What does that mean? Well, basically, we are not looking for stories that are just excuses for violence, blood and mayhem. =Grimoire= celebrates the type of writing and imagination that made Poe, Lovecraft, Machen and Blackwood famous. If you know those names and appreciate what they wrote, then we want to hear from you! =Grimoire= is open to new and established writers. We are open to stories of all length from prose poems to novellas. (Please query for manuscripts that are over 7,000 words.) We want to help new voices find their audience so please send us your submissions. We accept both electronic and hard copy submissions. For electronic, please send files to: grim_ed@yahoo.com in RTF format. For hard copy, please send to: =Grimoire=, P.O. Box 806, Bristol, R.I. 02809 Pays: 3 cents a word for fiction and non-fiction. Poetry varies depending upon length but is usually between $10-$40. =Grimoire= will be published four times a year with simultaneous postings on our website (http://angelfire.com/comics/ excaliberpress/grim.html). We look forward to reading your work! 16Jan03 [http://www.angelfire.com/comics/excaliberpres/submission.html] ----------------------------------------------------------------- MARKET INFORMATION BLACK GATE A writer on SFF.NET asked John O'Neill, editor of =Black Gate=, about the slushpile. "Are you attacking it in a mostly chronological manner -- oldest subs first -- or is it more whatever you happen to grab?" Mr. O'Neill replied, "I try to be pretty disciplined about it and read in strict chronological order. I will make exceptions for requested re-writes from people who've already waited in the queue the first time, and of course fiction from our anyone we've already published. Other than that, it's pretty much first come, first served." [sff.publishing.black-gate-magazine, 19 Apr 03] BORDERLANDS ANTHOLOGY Further elucidation on what the =Borderlands= anthology wants (or doesn't want): "We are receiving an absurd number of submissions from writers who have obviously not read any previous of the =Borderlands= Anthology series, or even the few lines of our market report and guidelines. "We do NOT want any stories of high, heroic, or classic fantasy, serial killers, ghost stories, serial killers, vampires, serial killers, or serial killers. "Writers who send us stories which have obviously been making the rounds are insulting us and demeaning themselves. Please refrain from doing this." [www.ralan.com] EGGPLANT LITERARY PRODUCTIONS A writer on the =Speculations= Rumor Mill said that Eggplant Literary Productions, ". . . stated they are 'looking for works that are less complete, more true excerpts that hint at a larger, unseen text.'" [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=15707&sh ow_all_topics=0, 25 Apr 03] H.P. LOVECRAFT'S MAGAZINE OF HORROR Ralan Conley's market website has more information about the upcoming =H.P. Lovecraft's Magazine of Horror=. Marvin Kaye is the editor, E-mail (no subs, queries only): HPL_Magazine@comcast.net We will read queries from HWA, SFWA, and MWA members and other established professionals, but *do not send stories without getting permission first*. Unsolicited stories will be deleted unread. The only thing we're looking for at the moment are proposals for interviews with major names in the horror field -- and proposals for ongoing non-fiction columns from well established professionals. These assignments will be made by Marvin Kaye. Response time is generally under 48 hours for e-mail queries. Payment is 3 cents/word. 16Apr03 [www.ralan.com] IDEOMANCER Chris Clarke, one of the editors for =Ideomancer=, said, "I like to run a short (flash) [story] each issue as it's something that sets us apart from other zines because we make a point of it. This month there will be no 'flash' because we don't have any. But there will be a 2400 word slipstream piece. "We used to get a lot of 'flash.' I don't know if it's a fad that passed but the few pieces we've seen lately haven't been =Ideo= style stories. "We have no flash in the inventory so if anyone has some good short-shorts, send them in. "A note on the genres (categories) that =Ideo= is divided into; I think we publish the broadest range of traditional genres and sub-genres (I think we draw the line at paranormal romance though) of any ezine but I hope they all have a particular Ideo flavour. We inherited the categories from the previous publisher Jon Oz and I've never really been comfortable with the labelling. Some of our stories could have fitted a number of categories. But a lot of readers/writers seem to feel a need for them. We may change this if I ever get the inclination or time to do a revamp of the site. "If anyone has stories they feel would suit =Ideo= but are outside our guidelines (though the only real limiting factor of our guidelines other than the intangible of what constitutes an Ideo story is the upper word limit) please just query. Despite some of the debates we've fuelled we really are a friendly, easy-going bunch who try to be as accommodating as possible." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=1249&show_all_ topics=0, 27 Apr 03] PARADOX A writer on the Rumor Mill said, "I just got issue #1 of =Paradox= yesterday (it's always reassuring when a magazine's first issue comes out) ... and it's beautiful. The cover is on nice, thick glossy stock, and the interior is really nicely illustrated and laid out. I haven't had a chance to read any of it yet, but I thought it was worth a mention in here that the first issue came out on schedule." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 23 Apr 03] REALMS OF FANTASY Carina Gonzalez, Editorial Assistant for =Realms of Fantasy=, said, "As you all know, it's fairly impossible for me to respond individually to all of my authors. HOWEVER, if an author even mentions in their cover letter that they would love any feedback, or would appreciate criticism, etc., I always take the extra 10 minutes or so to write them a little note as to what I think would help them. Keeping this genre going is why I'm doing this in the first place. So I would love to help my authors out as much as I possibly can! If any of you have any MORE suggestions on how I can make rejections less painful and more direction oriented I'd love to hear them... The key, unfortunately, is doing so in a timely fashion." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=52&show_all_to pics=0, 7 Apr 03] STRANGE HORIZONS Jed Hartman, one of the fiction editors for =Strange Horizons=, said, "SH has no minimum word-count requirement; we're definitely not opposed to short-short stories. The shortest standalone pieces we've published have been a bit over 600 words, but that's not due to an aversion to shorter stuff per se; a couple of shorter pieces have come pretty close. (A side note: I try to avoid using the term "flash" because there are so many different definitions of it. I gather some people use it to mean "stories under 500 words that have twist endings"; since we don't like twist endings in general, such stories are a hard sell for us.)" [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=15707&sh ow_all_topics=0, 23 Apr 03] WRITERS OF THE FUTURE CONTEST On of the contest administrators for the Writers of the Future Contest said, "Two changes to the rules have been implemented for each of the Contests to increase our efficiency: "(1) We no longer accept entries for which a signature is required to receive the entry. When the entry is mailed to the respective post office box, simply ensure no signature is required by us to receive the entry. "(2) Beginning with the quarter running April 1 to June 30, we will send judging results only to entrants who submit a self addressed, stamped envelope or a valid email address. If the entrant wishes the entry returned, we will send the judging results with the entry in the entrant's self-addressed, stamped envelope. If the entrant does not wish the entry returned, a business-size self-addressed, stamped envelope should be submitted to receive the judging results. If we have a valid email address and no return envelope, we will send the judging results via email."
