CALLIHOO BEGINS ELEVENTH YEAR It hardly seems possible that this writing critique group could go on for over ten years, but CALLIHOO has done just that. With this issue we begin another "fiscal" year of CALLIHOO (the group actually started a month or so before I started the newsletter). Although the membership in the group has changed a great deal over the years, we still have a group who enjoy each other's company and are dedicated to trying to improve the quality of our writing. I wish success this year to all CALLIHOOligans, past and present, and to those of you (my E-CALLIHOOts) who get the newsletter electronically. Write on! ----------------------------------------------------------------- DEADLINES Check out the CALLIHOO website, listed above, for more information on these contests, magazine issues, and anthologies. E-mail subs only. Deadline 1 July 2003. RT 1 mo.] microSHOCKS An Anthology of Very Short Horror Fiction M. W. Anderson, Editor Submissions: mwanderson@artandfiction.com Notice to Authors: =MicroSHOCKS= is a spin-off from the micro anthology "In a Nutshell..." While the original "In a Nutshell..." anthology is still a viable project in search of a publisher, the Horror section has split-off to form a Horror-only anthology, to be published by 3F Publications. Authors with previously accepted stories to the Horror section are urged to contact the editor with any new contact information, change in story availability, rights issues, etc. Submission Guidelines: While stories to 500 words are still preferred, the maximum word count has been raised to 1000 words. All stories MUST contain an element of horror, and psychological/reality-based horror is the editor's personal preference. However, due to the fact that this project is now book-length rather than a 1/4-book section, a wider variety of stories will be accepted. Humor and standard tropes must be truly exceptional to stand a chance of acceptance. Unique ghost stories, however, are encouraged, as are stories of dark Surrealism and Magical Realism. To reiterate, the key words are: Horrific, Terrifying--DARK. Exceptional verse will be considered, but again, it will be a hard sell. Email submissions only, attached as a rich text format file. Standard manuscript format is expected (12pt. courier, double- spaced, one inch margins, etc.). Payment is $.05/word, paid on publication. Send all submissions, information & queries to: M. W. Anderson at mwanderson@artandfiction.com This anthology will close to submissions on July 1st, 2003. Response time: anywhere from 10 minutes to one month. If you've not received a response by July 1st, send a query to the editor. [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&show_all_t opics=0, 10 May 03] A writer on the =Speculations= Rumor Mill said of =Agony in Black=, "I'll reinforce the earlier report that he's not looking to publish any supernatural fiction in =AiB= for as long as he can manage." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&show_all_t opics=0, 13 May 03] ANDROMEDA SPACEWAYS A writer on the Rumor Mill said, "I just received a request from the editor of the December Issue of =Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine= for holiday type stories (see details below). Their web site has complete submission details; http://www.andromedaspaceways.com As I understand it, the editor would need these stories by August in order to make her deadline for the December issue. My suggestion would be to include a reference to "Monissa Whiteley's December Issue" request in your cover letter. They take email submissions. Here is the text of Ms. Whiteley's request: "For the December issue of ASIM, I'd love to see some stories with a holiday theme. I might even buy one or two. "It doesn't have to be a Christmas story; solstice festivals, end of year celebrations or summer holidays are all possibilities. As long as it's integral to the plot and not tacked on. "Ideally, the story will have strong fantasy or science fiction elements (I don't care much for urban fantasy) and be under 4000 words. As well as being well written, with strong characters and an original idea. Of course that's possible, it's Christmas." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 5 May 03] BLACK GATE A writer on SFF.NET says that she got a note from editor John O'Neill of =Black Gate= magazine saying he's read too many redone fairy tales. [sff.writing.response-times, 9 May 03] BORDERLANDS 5 A writer on the Rumor Mill says that he got a response from Elizabeth at =Borderlands #5= on a . . . query. Due to overwhelming volume of submissions, they've had to close the anthology. [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&show_all_t opics=0, 11 May 03] CAMP HORROR A writer on the Rumor Mill says that he received an E-mail rejection from =Camp Horror=. "Editor states that he's now closed to submissions, having been overwhelmed after a listing on Ralan's." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=15818&sh ow_all_topics=0, 4 May 03] F&SF A writer on the Rumor Mill says that a response from =F&SF= said they'd seen too many "return from the dead" stories lately. [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=15858&sh ow_all_topics=0, 5 May 05] INTERZONE A writer on the Rumor Mill said, ". . .if you get an e-mail from a Raoul Izzard with no subject line it may not be spam. Raoul is the first reader at =Interzone=." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=15778&sh ow_all_topics=0, 29 Apr 03] MICROSHOCKS M. W. Anderson, editor of the =MicroSHOCKS= horror anthology, said, "If you were unaware of the =MicroSHOCKS= horror anthology, well, you can now consider yourself officially informed: http://www.3fpublications.com/microshocks.html "I need 50,000 words of HORROR fiction to take this anthology to book length. Max word count has been raised to 1000 words. "Get busy." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=178&show_all_t opics=0, 10 May 03] PALACE OF REASON Francis W. Porretto, publisher of =Palace of Reason=, said, "Bad news again at the =Palace=. "My newly-engaged Fiction Editor, Elise Teitelbaum, has just resigned. This time it was over differences with me. "Accordingly, the =Palace= will once again close to submissions until I can find another Fiction Editor. Hopefully, that won't be a long time, but one can never know. I intend for the June edition to appear as scheduled, though it might be something of a mishmash, as I haven't had any time at all to review submissions." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 11 May 05] SAY. . . A writer on the Rumor Mill said, "I see on Ralan's that the next issue of =Say...= will be "Say... Aren't you dead?" But it won't open until June 1st." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 2 May 03] Christopher Rowe, Editor of =Say...=, said, "Just a quick clarification on the "Dead" issue of =Say...=, as I don't think Ralan included this bit. We won't be publishing any stories about vampires, zombies or famous dead people. If we publish even one ghost story, it'll be the best damned ghost story I ever read. All other circulated guidelines still apply. "And as always, we'd love to see more stories by women and more comics by anybody." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 2 May 03] STRANGE HORIZONS Jed Hartman, one of the fiction editors for =Strange Horizons=, said, "As most of you probably know by now, Chris Heinemann, one of the =Strange Horizons= fiction editors, has, sadly, left the magazine. This means that we're looking for another fiction editor to join me and Susan. If you're interested in applying, see our jobs page for information about duties, qualifications, and how to apply. "Note that all positions are volunteer -- no pay." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=291&show_all_t opics=0, 3 May 03] ==End of the CALLIHOO Newsletter for 13 May 2003==
