Pays 10 cents/wd. on accept. No reprints, sim, mult or E-mail subs.] Lou Anders, Editor Argosy Magazine PO Box 43099 Birmingham, AL 35243 Queries only: coppervale@skyboot.com Website: www.coppervale.com (after 1 Aug 2003) July 14, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Coppervale International is pleased to announce plans to develop and publish three new groundbreaking magazines, beginning with the arts and culture magazine =International Studio=, which premieres at a launch party on July 17 at Comic Con International in San Diego. Under the Editorial Directorship of James A. Owen, Coppervale is relaunching the century-old arts and culture magazine, =International Studio=, under the philosophy that a consumer- oriented, advertising-funded arts magazine would thrive in a visually-oriented culture. Owen and his editorial team realized that similar opportunities existed in other markets, and have planned to release =Argosy= and =Words & Pictures= in the coming months, basing them on an economic structure and a cohesive editorial vision similar to that of =International Studio=. Collectively, these magazines constitute the practical expression of the philosophy Coppervale calls the Romantic Underground. =International Studio= is a large format, high quality, full color magazine developed to promote and be an influence within the illustrative and literary arts. The cover-featured illustrator of the debut issue is fantasy artist James Christensen; other features profile Sleeping Beauty conceptual designer Eyvind Earle, landscape artist Ogden Pleissner, designer and painter John Picacio, and British graphic novel illustrator Gary Spencer Millidge. The second issue, due in August, will feature cover artist Barry Windsor-Smith, and longtime Disney painter Herbert Ryman. Two more issues are scheduled for 2003, increasing to ten a year in 2004. At 64 to 96 pages, =International Studio= carries advertising, is distributed worldwide to bookstores and galleries, and retails for $14.95. Over the Halloween weekend of 2003, Coppervale will be reviving the classic fiction magazine =Argosy= under Senior Editor Lou Anders. Contributors include Michael Moorcock, Harlan Ellison, Jeffrey Ford, Caitlin R. Kiernan, Andy Duncan, Kai Meyer, Ann Cummins, and Dr. Jean Houston. Acclaimed illustrators Leo and Diane Dillon will be the cover artists, and Steve Rude (of Nexus comics) will illustrate the interiors. Trade paperback-sized, each issue will be comprised of two volumes--the main magazine, and a separately-bound novella--and will be packaged in an illustrated slipcase. At 200 pages, =Argosy= will initially ship on a quarterly schedule, carries advertising, and will retail for $12.00. In the Spring of 2004, Coppervale will be releasing a new monthly magazine called =Words & Pictures=. Contributors include Paul Chadwick, Mike Baron, Steve Rude, James A. Owen, and Chris Roberson; and the centerpiece of the magazine will be Bryan Talbot's new tour-de-force work, Alice in Sunderland. The Coppervale International website, inclusive of all three magazines, will be going online on August 1 2003, and can be found at www.coppervale.com. All correspondence, advertising queries, submissions, and retail ordering information may be directed to our principal email address at coppervale@skyboot.com, or by contacting the Coppervale Studio at 313 East Center St., Taylor AZ 85939; Fax: 928-536-4293; Phone: 928-536-3596. =Argosy= Submission Guidelines =Argosy= is a literary magazine with a fantastical/surrealistic bent. We publish fiction and nonfiction, genre and non-genre. We are looking for science fiction, fantasy, mystery, crime, suspense, magical realism, slipstream, and interesting/edgy mainstream fiction. Regarding nonfiction, we are looking for "essays not articles," by which we mean, pieces that are not tied directly into current events. We are not interested in single book reviews or other time-sensitive topics, but are looking for essays which will be as interesting to read five years from now as they are today. We do not consider poetry. We do not reprint previously published material. Fiction may be up to 40,000 words in length, nonfiction up to 10,000 words. Payment is 10 cents a word on acceptance. We buy First World English Rights and non-exclusive anthology rights. All other rights are retained by the author. Please submit one story or essay at a time. We do not accept simultaneous submissions. Submit clearly typed manuscripts, double-spaced on 8x11 white paper, one side only. Brief cover letters are helpful. The submission must contain your name, address, telephone number and an email address (where one is available). Please indicate estimated word count on the top sheet of your manuscript. We cannot respond to manuscripts that are not accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Please indicate if you wish your manuscript returned, and provide appropriate postage along with a 9" x 12" envelope. Persons submitting from overseas should send a disposable manuscript (marked as such) along with a letter-sized SASE and an International Reply Coupon. We do not accept submissions via fax or email. Five years later, they published =Gate of Ivrel=, C.J. Cherryh's first published novel. Five years after that, 13 Cherryh novels had seen print, firmly establishing her as a writer of substance and imagination. Today she has published more than 70 books, and her works are routinely translated into several languages for international publication. In this tale of time it is remarkable to note a few short years will bring us to 30 years of active writing and publishing by this prolific and influential writer. What better time than now to gather a collection of scholarly articles and essays about Cherryh's career, body of work, and influence on science fiction and fantasy publishing and fandom? Editor Edward Carmien in conjunction with publisher John Betancourt of Wildside Press seeks submissions for an anthology of non-fiction articles and essays about C.J. Cherryh, her work, her career, and her place in the pantheon of fantasy and science fiction publishing and fandom. Guidelines: Submissions must fall within the range of 2,000-8,000 words, be written and formatted in MLA format (double-spaced, typed, citation format), and be sent to the address below. Previously published material is acceptable. SEND A DISPOSABLE COPY OF YOUR MANUSCRIPT (DO NOT SEND YOUR ONLY COPY). Manuscripts will not be returned. Wildside Press acquires non-exclusive anthology rights to include the works in all editions of this book. Individual copyrights are retained by the author. Romanko Editor & Publisher 19 June 2003 [ravenelectrick.com/writersguidelns/index.htm] ----------------------------------------------------------------- MARKET INFORMATION ABYSS & APEX Leah Bobet, Submissions editor for =Abyss & Apex=, said, "=Abyss & Apex= is fairly stocked up with fiction at the moment, so we'll be closing to submissions for the months of June, July, and August (reopening September 1st). "Looking forward to seeing fiction from everyone come September!" [sff.publishing.news, 28 May 03] AMAZING STORIES A writer on sff.net said, "An acquaintance of mine works at Paizo (editor of =Star Wars Insider=), and he says that while they've bought the magazine, nothing's in place yet. Further, he says that there's little discussion of what's to happen. The grapevine in the local publishing scene is that Paizo's having some financial . . . challenges, so it may be a while before there's any news on the subject." [sff.publishing.news, 10 Jul 03] ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION A writer on sff.net said, "One of the ways you can tell how your submission [to =Asimov's=] fared is if it comes back postmarked Philadelphia or New York. In the former case it usually went home with Gardner [Dozois, editor]." sff.writing.response-times, 10 Jul 03] BORDERLANDS 5 A writer on the =Speculations= Rumor Mill said that, in a rejection from the =Borderlands 5= anthology, they requested he try them again in mid-winter 2004 for the next antho. [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/index.php?t=201&m=16499&sh ow_all_topics=0, 2 Jul 03] POLYPHONY 4 Jay Lake, one of the editors of the =Polyphony= anthologies, said, "We won't be formally announcing =Polyphony 4= until after the =Polyphony 3= table of contents is released, but here's your preannouncement, for those of you with enough discernment to hang around on *our* newsgroup. "=Polyphony 4= will be released at Norwescon in 2004. The mailing period will be from September 1st to October 15th, 2003. We will be reading in the fall, commencing after the mailing period. Guidelines will be substantially similar with some minor changes. "Minor change #1 -- No duplicate submissions. One story to a customer. Multiple subs will result in all stories being rejected out of hand. If you simply *must* multisub, talk to us. We'll be hard to convince, but I'm always up for hearing a good excuse. "Minor change #2 -- No reprints. Not even if the prior appearance was in the =Manitoba Tractor Quarterly and Modern Verse Review=, circ. 14. If you have a reprint we *must* see, talk to us. We'll be nigh impossible to convince unless you're a multiple-award winning author, and tough then, but I'm always up for hearing a good excuse. "Minor change #3 -- Use standard manuscript format. I couldn't give a rat's ass about font (within reason, no Harry-Obese or Circus-Modern, please) but manuscripts submitted without identifying information on the first page and running headers will be rejected out of hand. I had *way* too many manuscripts this round that, once orphaned from their enclosing email or SASE/cover letter became foundlings, nameless and homeless. I don't understand why any writer, ever, would do that, but many folks did. "I'm sure we'll think of some other stuff, too. Watch here, *Speculations* and Ralan.com for the official guidelines in a few weeks. Mr. Lake continued, "Here's a few tips for =Polyphony 4= subs-- "1 - Use self-sealing envelopes for your SASE. It won't make us any more likely to buy your story, but I'll think better of you for it. "2 - More zeppelins and airships. I love zeppelins and airships. At least some damned good, literary steampunk. (Now watch me get 200 airship stories this fall...) "3 - If you live outside the US, use US stamps on your SASE. Heck, I'll even email you a response if you're a furriner. But I don't have a stamp collection any more, so those furrin stamps don't do me a lot of good. "4 - Chat us up on the board here [sff.publishing.polyphony]. That way we'll feel guilty about rejecting you, and the next time you send us a story we'll look at more kindly. Or not, but I like the company. "More info when I have it." [sff.publishing.polyphony, 28 Apr 03] Deborah Layne, editor and publisher of the =Polyphony= anthologies, said, "Just to clarify, well correct, something Jay said. The longest story I've bought so far is a bit over 18K and it'll be in P3. Besides that one, we've only had two others over 10K. Anything over 10K is going to be a hard sell for me for the reasons Jay said. My advice would be to query before you send something that doesn't meet the stated guidelines. That way you don't look like a putz who can't read guidelines, you don't have to wonder if your story was only rejected because it fell outside the guidelines and we don't have to wonder what we did that made the guidelines incomprehensible. Win-win. Email queries are always welcome and I try to answer them promptly. [sff.publishing.polyphony, 1 May 03] Ms. Layne continued, "In our case, and I guess it's a little different everywhere, I sent out email acceptances to everyone. It's an email that says, "we want to accept this story for publication on these terms, do you agree?" Next I will send written contracts to all the writers, then I'll send them a check when they've returned the contracts." [sff.publishing.polyphony, 6 May 03] REALMS OF FANTASY Carina Gonzalez, editorial assistant for =Realms of Fantasy=, said, "Due to the constant confusion of my old e-mail address, I've decided to go with one attached to the slush site. I can now be reached at roflist@yahoo.com. "Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but in the long run, it will be MUCH easier to get right..." [sff.publishing.realms-of-fantasy, 15 Jul 03] THE UNCANNY CAT John Betancourt, publisher of Wildside Press, said, "I'm looking for a few previously professionally published cat stories (contemporary fantasy or Twilight Zone style mild horror) in which bad things DO NOT happen to the cat. Bad things can happen to dogs or humans. "This is for a new Wildside Press anthology, =The Uncanny Cat=. It's primarily going to be public domain classics, but I want a few modern stories to flesh it out. "Payment: $50.00 (flat fee). No originals. "I can be reached at wildsidepress@yahoo.com" [sff.publishing.market-report, 23 June 2003] ==End of the CALLIHOO Newsletter for 15 July 2003==
