My friend and fellow writer, Brad Beaulieu did the video and another friend, known as the Rose Phantom in the music scene, composed the original song, which you can download for free on my site. View the trailer at www.paulgenesse.com. Please check it out and forward this email to your friends. "Also, [I reiterate] the invite to my book release party on Saturday May 10 from 3-9 p.m. Around 80 people have RSVP'd so far, and I think over a 100 people will be there. It would be good if you RSVP'd, but don't worry, you can just show up and I'll be glad to see you. For the locals, if you can't come to the party, please come to my book signing at the Sugarhouse Barnes and Noble on June 6 from 7-9 PM, or try to visit me on my book tour in May as I travel across the West. The dates and locations are on my website in the News section. "In other news, =The Golden Cord= sold out on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com, though Amazon has more books now for a great price. "The book has also received a bunch of great reviews, two very notable ones from from Library Journal, The Pedestal Magazine and VOYA Magazine. They're on my website if you're interested." CONTEST Darwin's Evolutions First Annual Halloween Contest [Creepy SF/F to 7500 wds. 1st prize $100 and pub, 2nd $50 and pub, 3rd $25 and pub. E-subs okay. Deadline 1 July 08.] Darwin's Evolutions is proud to announce that we are accepting the submission of new stories for consideration in our First Annual Halloween Issue Contest. This is not a "Horror" genre contest. Rather, we are looking for the most creative stories that brush the established tropes of science fiction and fantasy against the "creepy" side of the questions of the spirit realm and life after death. Horrific aspects may or may not be present but the key is to tell tales that carry the "feel" of Halloween with them. All of our standard guidelines for the acceptance of new fiction stories are still in force, except that the word limit is capped at 7,500. Additionally, you must include the words "Halloween Contest Submission" in the header of your e-mail when you send us your manuscript. We will also be accepting hardcopy manuscripts at our new P.O. Box address: Darwin's Evolutions, P.O. Box 816, Bloomington, IN 47402. The top three placing stories will be published in our Halloween issue and will also receive the following prize benefits: First place: $100.00 in addition to contract and the cover art will be based on your story. Second place: $50.00 in addition to contract. Third place: $25.00 in addition to contract. The top five finalists will all be recognized in the issue although only the top three are guaranteed publication. Deadline is 12:00 AM EST July 1, 2008. Please direct questions to editor@darwinsevolutions.com. The submission e-mail for this contest is the same as our new fiction e-mail: newfictionsubs@darwinsevolutions.com Again, please remember to include the words "Halloween Contest Submission" in the subject line of your submission e-mail. Good luck! I'm looking forward to seeing your entries! http://www.darwinsevolutions.com/halloween.html MARKET GUIDELINES Darwin's Evolutions [Webzine, SF/F to 10k wds. Pays 1/8 cent per wd., min. $20 + tips.] New Fiction Submission Guidelines The focus of Darwin's Evolutions is to provide works built upon a solid bedrock of storytelling. We are not a literary market, although a good story with literary finesse is a jewel. We are not a partisan outlet encouraging a specific group, sub-group, or political demographic to "raise their voice", although a good story that accounts for and addresses societal concerns can have added depth. The primary word is "story". There has to be one in a fiction submission if you want to sell to us. Our preferred length is less than 10k words, with 5k being optimal. However, feel free to submit longer stories if you believe they have merit. We ask that you be aware, however, that the bar for acceptance for longer stories will be much higher. Our editorial staff ascribes to the "200 word rule". You get 200 words to hook the reader. If you don't, then your work will most likely be rejected. As a guideline, within those 200 words there should be characters to care about, a solid feel for the world you have created, and a situation that needs dealt with. Somewhere in the rest of the story, the characters need to deal with their situation through dint of their own efforts and, by the end, they need to have learned something or grown somehow. That is our working definition of a "story". Activist fiction, i.e. fiction that is written from the go to preach a specific social, political, or religious point of view, is not welcome at this publication. Much can be forgiven for a good story, but good stories rarely come from demagogues. The genres we seek can best be described as broad-band science fiction and fantasy up to and including slipstream, elements of horror, romance, whatever. Please keep the gore out, the sexual innuendo and language PG-13, and your submission will be welcome. No fan fiction. We offer $0.0125 per word for new fiction with a minimum payout of $20. For this investment, we expect the rights to publish your story in multiple electronic prose formats and in audio form within the body of the periodical itself and/or as stand-alone added content piece posted directly off the website. Also, the purchase grants us the right to add your story to our archives for a period of one year after date of publication. We do not pay royalties. Any additional payout will be direct to you via your on-line tip jars. The copyright of the work always belongs to you. After one year in our archives, you may choose to leave the story there in the hopes of it garnering extra attention and income or take it down at your discretion. Releases go "out of print" after a single contributor pulls an included story from the site. Individual stories from out of print issues will still be available in the archives at their respective author's discretion. Accompanying every story link will be a link to the author's personal tip jar. This will allow readers to express any appreciation they have for your story directly to you. The actual handling of the tip jar may be dictated by IRS rules regarding tips, so the handling may have to go through Evolutions accounting before being released to the author. If required, we will issue donations out to authors on a monthly basis by default. However, the author will have a private page to go to that will allow them immediate access to what donations have been received and will be able to request an immediate release of funds if necessary. Please note that all donations directed to an author will be issued to the author by their preferred method. There will be no publication "surcharge" applied to your tips outside of requirements by the IRS. Selection for our "Year's Best" anthology will be determined by tip jar receipts for individual stories. The submission e-mail for new fiction is: newfictionsubs@darwinsevolutions.com http://www.darwinsevolutions.com/newfictionsubs.html Interzone [British bimonthly printzine, SF/F to 10k wds. Pays up to pro rates. E-subs May only, No sim or mult subs or reprints. RT 2 months.] Editor: Andy Cox It is strongly recommended that you study the magazine before submitting. This will obviously greatly improve your chances of acceptance. Non-Fiction: We are not currently open to submissions of non-fiction, although suggestions are always welcome. The best place for this is the forum. Artwork: We are always happy to hear from artists wanting to work on Interzone. Send us a portfolio that we can keep on file, or an email pointing us to your website or gallery. Short Stories: We are always open to submissions of new science fiction and fantasy short stories of up to about 10,000 words in length. Please send your manuscript mailed flat or folded no more than once, in standard format (double spaced, good margins, printed on one side of the paper), with a covering letter and adequate return postage (ie a stamped, self-addressed envelope). Overseas submissions should be disposable and accompanied by two IRCs or an email address which we'll use to reply. All submissions must be in hard copy except during specified email reading windows. Unsolicited submissions sent by email at other times will be deleted. Never send simultaneous submissions, multiple submissions or reprints. NB: if you receive a rejection from Interzone please don't then submit that story to another of our magazines, as we will already have considered that option. WHERE TO SEND YOUR STORIES Snail mail: Interzone, TTA Press, 5 Martins Lane, Witcham, Ely, Cambs CB6 2LB, UK. Email submission windows for Interzone only Interzone is open to email submissions but at only certain times of the year, for one month at a time. Please follow the postal submission guidelines, with the following exceptions: Anything submitted outside these periods will be deleted unread. There is a different email account for each reading period: May 2008, email to: Interzone.May2008@gmail.com Please send the stories as attachments, not in the body of the email. Story files will be fed into a PDA, so please format the stories single-spaced, and send them as .RTF-files (which take up somewhat less memory space than .DOC files). Put "SUBMISSION: STORY TITLE" in the header of the email. http://ttapress.com/185/interzone-contributors-guidelines/ MARKET INFORMATION Jim Baen's Universe Magazine In Baen's Bar, a writer asked, "Is there any idea when Jim Baen's Universe will be reopening to submissions?" Sam Hidaka answered, "As a matter of fact, submissions are open as of today. The "Submission Guidelines" page still states that we're closed because . . . uh . . . well, it's long story. But essentially, our tech people are all tied up. But I re-instated the Submission Webform, which had been offline during the submission hiatus. "You can submit to regular submissions here: http://www.baensuniverse.com/submit.cgi Or you can submit through the "Baen's Universe Slush" forum, which is always open. Sorry for the confusion caused by the "Submission Guidelines" page." [Group: Baen's Universe eMagazine, 01 May 2008] End of the CALLIHOO Newsletter for 1 May 2008
