Raborg, Jr. I'm sorry to return the submissions so abruptly, but the volume of mail made personal notes impossible." Eileen Raborg [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/topic84.htm, 11 Sep 2001] BONETREE A writer on the Rumor Mill received an email from =Bonetree='s editor saying that "For many reasons" she's decided to close =Bonetree=. She's accepting no more submissions as of this moment. So it's official; =Bonetree= is closed. [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/topic221.htm, 9 Jul 2001] CICADA =Cicada= (the small press magazine devoted to the oriental, not the magazine for young adults), is gone. See =Amelia= above. DARKTALES PUBLICATIONS From a DarkTales Publications mailing: Re: Eros anthology, edited by Butch Miller "It is with sincere regret that DarkTales Publications announces the suspension of the =Eros= anthology project. First launched in February of 2000, the =Eros= project had been slated for publication in mid-2001, but has since fallen far behind schedule, and now appears all but lost. The anthology's editor, Butch Miller, has been distracted by numerous professional conflicts and, rather than wait it out any longer, DarkTales has decided to pull the plug on the project. "DarkTales apologizes to all involved, particularly those authors who submitted stories and are still waiting for a response. Suffice it to say we are disappointed too but this situation-- like many things in life--is unfortunately beyond our control. "Again, the staff of DarkTales regretfully apologizes to all." Keith Herber, David Nordhaus, Nick Kaufmann [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/topic221.htm, 28 Aug 2001] MUSE IT A writer on the Rumor Mill says, "=Muse It= says it's closed indefinitely." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/topic221.htm, 3 Oct 2001] REALITY'S ESCAPE A writer on the Rumor Mill says, "I think it's safe to assume that =Reality's Escape= has gone under and that it took 7-Realms Publishing Corp and all its projects (chapbooks) previously planned with it. The website has been taken over by something else." [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/topic221.htm, 19 Sep 2001] SCHEHERAZADE MAGAZINE Liz Counihan says, "Reports of the death of =Scheherazade Magazine= are exaggerated. We are not dead, nor even sleeping, BUT ALIVE AND WELL. Check our website www.shez.fsnet.co.uk" [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/topic221.htm, 7 May 2001] TAPESTRY MAGAZINE Shannon Riley, editor of =Tapestry Magazine=, says, "I'll try to clear up some questions about the closing of =Tapestry Magazine=. =Tapestry= (print publication) has been cancelled due to lack of funds and other problems, and plans for =Tapestry Online= have been suspended for the present. "The 'other problems,' specifically those resulting from the domain rights of southerngothic.net, which caused me to have to change the name of my publication to =Tapestry= to begin with, are what led to =Tapestry='s closing -- the added expenses incurred from having to scrap all printed material for =Southern Gothic= and have new flyers, guidesheets, etc. printed for =Tapestry=, the long distance phone calls informing contributors of the change who could not be reached by email, the registering of domain names for =Tapestry Magazine= and Southern Rose Productions to insure that a similiar problem did not arise in the future, and other costs. I have spent money earmarked for contributors' pay rate increases covering ground I had already covered. "At this point, funds have been depleted to the point I cannot continue. Therefore, ALL rights to accepted material have been reverted to contributors, who may also keep the payments made upon acceptance of their work. "I would like to make this clear: The problem here is not my contributors, who have been wonderful, and who I appreciate more than I can say, nor is it the small cash payments made to contributors -- I had plans to increase rates again in November, had not the problems with southerngothic.net come up. The problem is the added expense and work of starting over after I had given away the first issue of =Southern Gothic= and sold the second issue for only $2.50, about 1/2 actual cost. I had done this as a promotion and to enable contributors with limited funds to obtain a sample copy. All that was for nothing when I had to start over with =Tapestry=. "I have not ruled out the possibility of an online version of =Tapestry= later on, once I have reorganized. If I decided to launch =Tapestry= as an ezine, an announcement will be made on my personal website: URL: http://shannonriley.homestead.com/. In the meantime, I have set up a page to answer contributors' questions at http://tapestrymagazine.homestead.com/. If you have concerns or questions not addressed there, I can be reached by email at shannonriley@southernroseproductions.com. "I hope this will clear up some of the confusion. Thank you for the opportunity of posting this message." Shannon Riley, Editor and Publisher, =Tapestry Magazine=, Southern Rose Productions [http://www.speculations.com/rumormill/topic221.htm, 17 Jul 2001] ***************************************************************** * ". . .what . . . does writing teach us? * * * * First and foremost, it reminds us that we *are* alive and * * that it is a gift and a privilege, not a right. We must earn * * life once it has been awarded us. Life asks for rewards back * * because it has favored us with animation. . . . * * * * Secondly, writing is survival. Any art, *any* good work, of * * course, is that. * * * * Not to write, for many of us, is to die. * * * * We must take arms each and every day, perhaps knowing that * * the battle cannot be entirely won, but fight we must, if only * * a gentle bout. The smallest effort to win means, at the end * * of each day, a sort of victory. Remember that pianist who * * said that if he did not practice every day *he* would know, * * if he did not practice for two days, the *critics* would * * know, after three days, his *audiences* would know. * * * * A variation of this is true for writers. Not that your * * style, whatever it is, would melt out of shape in those few * * days. * * * * But what would happen is that the world would catch up with * * and try to sicken you. If you did not write every day, the * * poisons would accumulate and you would begin to die, or act * * crazy, or both. * * * * You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy * * you." * * --Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing * ***************************************************************** ==End of the CALLIHOO Newsletter for 23 October 2001==
