In 1998, Pocket published a six-book miniseries called Captain's Table, in which Enterprise Captains Christopher Pike, James T. Kirk, and Jean-Luc Picard, Excelsior Captain Hikaru Sulu, Deep Space 9 Captain Benjamin Sisko, Voyager Captain Kathryn Janeway, and Excalibur Captain Mackenzie Calhoun were brought to the mysterious Captain's Table, a timeless saloon open only to captains, where the only price to pay for a drink is to tell a story.

In 2000, the anthology Enterprise Logs provided more adventures of the various captains of ships with that name, from the Revolutionary War and World War II, to the first starship Enterprise skipper, Robert April, to the aforementioned Pike, Kirk, and Picard, to Willard Decker, Spock, John Harriman, and Rachel Garrett.

Since then, several captains have been added to the Star Trek pantheon. In 2000, New Frontier's Commander Shelby got promoted, and was eventually given command of the Trident. That same year saw the debut of Star Trek: S.C.E. and the introduction of Captain David Gold of the da Vinci. The 2001 debut of Enterprise gave us Jonathan Archer. In 2002, Pocket launched the Stargazer series focusing on Jean-Luc Picard's adventures on his first command, and the movie Star Trek Nemesis gave us the long-awaited promotion of William T. Riker, and the movie ended with his going off to take command of the Titan. And then in 2003 we got the launch of my own I.K.S. Gorkon series starring Captain Klag, son of M'Raq; the promotion of Chakotay to captain in the post-finale Voyager novel The Farther Shore; the entry of Bajor into the Federation and the transformation of Kira Nerys from colonel to captain in the Deep Space Nine hardcover Unity; and the Lost Era novel Serpents Among the Ruins ended with Demora Sulu replacing John Harriman as captain of the Enterprise-B.

With all these new captains popping up, I felt that the time was ripe to reopen this unique tavern, so I gathered up a bunch of Trek authors to give these new skippers a chance to belly up to the bar and spin a yarn in an all-new anthology.

Tales from the Captain's Table features nine new stories -- plus an all-new introduction by the man who built the Captain's Table, the miniseries' co-developer Dean Wesley Smith.

The table of contents is as follows:
