All of the details about the surface of Callisto in this story are pure speculation; there's never been anything that's landed on the surface to find out. While lots of interesting surface chemistry is expected, right now scientists don't have a clue as to the nature of the strange dark material that covers much of the moon. There is some evidence that the surface contains clays.
