The Ganymede surface is mottled and complex, with lots of craters and signs of ancient tectonic activity. For images of the surface and further details, follow this link#1 or this link#2. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the surface (based on Galileo spacecraft images, show that there is a dark material in the lower regions but cleaner, lighter ice on the hills and crater rims.
