The Wolves in the Band
Abandoned in infancy, Jack Keller has always been a loner, until he meets the four guys who become his family. One complication — they're werewolves — leads to another — so is he. But if living as an outsider was hard, trying to make a place for himself among the wolves is harder yet. Still reeling from the shock of discovering he's not human, he has to accept his place as leader of his pack. He may be a prodigal, but some of the wolves are sizing him up for the fatted calf instead. Now he must go against the entire werewolf community to fight for his birthright, the woman he loves, and the new family he must lead. And to lose this fight is to die.

Like passing through a doorway, one second everything was as usual, and the next it was not. Jack immediately felt the presence of other, felt a force all but pressing against, a force of will that made him push back.
"Father is meeting us," Art said. "Can you scent him?"
Mike had tensed on the seat beside Jack. "Not good," he said.
Art shook his head. "He's like that. He just wants everyone to know he's in charge. There —" he said.
Jack felt the push ease up. It hadn't gone away, just eased up to where Jack didn't feel like he was being forced anywhere, but he still felt the presence, the power, that might try to push him again.
"—he's welcoming us to his territory."
"Welcome?" Mike asked.
"As welcoming as one alpha can be to another. Especially the alpha of a Family."
"Stick your head out the window and wave to Nick and Steve that everything is fine," Jack told Mike. "They're getting all upset back there."
Mike did as Jack asked. Then they sat quietly, waiting. There were others, other forces, but none of them had the potential of Art's father. Jack wondered if he felt like that to his men.
