SOARES NEWS

BIG
NEWS: IN SICKNESS Coming in 2010
Laura
and I have sold our joint short story collection IN SICKNESS to SKULLVINES
PRESS, and it is coming out next year. Here's the official press release:
Horror
Writer L.L. Soares, has just announced that SKULLVINES PRESS will be
publishing the short story collection IN SICKNESS, due out in 2010.
A joint collection between Soares and his wife, author Laura Cooney,
IN SICKNESS is made up of three sections: solo stories by Cooney, stories
by Soares, and a 12k novella entitled "In Sickness," written
by Cooney and Soares in collaboration.
This
collection of very dark tales includes three stories that received Honorable
Mentions in past editions of THE YEAR'S BEST FANTASY AND HORROR, and
is made up of previously published stories, as well as several new ones
which will be published for the first time in this edition.
Like
Bonnie and Clyde armed with words instead of guns, they'll take you
on a very wild journey indeed.
At
this time, everyone involved would also like to unveil a draft of the
upcoming cover, using the art of painter Valerie Kahn-Dorato.
Cooney
and Soares are very excited to be working with SKULLVINES PRESS to make
this book a reality. More news is forthcoming as we approach the publication
date.

Story
Sale to SHROUD Magazine
My
story "Something Blue" has been accepted by SHROUD Magazine
and will be appearing in issue # 6. With this issue, SHROUD should also
be increasing their distribution to include several book store chains,
etc. More on this when it becomes available.

New
Story in RAW: Brutality As Art
My
story "Still Life With Soul Juice" can be found in the new
anthology RAW: BRUTALITY AS ART from Snuff Books, edited by Adam Huber.
This is the first anthology by this new small press and you can get
the book at the usual outlets (Amazon, Horror-Mall.com, etc.)

"Bright
Green" in the TRAPS Anthology
My
short story, "Bright Green" appeared in the anthology TRAPS
from DarkHart Press, edited by Scott T. Goudsward. This book is available

NEW
CO-CHAIR OF NEHW
As
of this fall, I am the new co-chair of the NEW ENGLAND HORROR WRITERS
(NEHW), along with Daniel G. Keohane (yep, he was also my co-author
on the story "Mermaids" which appeared in Cemetery Dance
Magazine). We've got a lot of ideas for the organization and I've really
excited about this.
With
over 100 members, NEHW is the organization for horror and dark fantasy
writers in the New England area.
Cinema
Knife Fight RETURNS!
Yessiree,
after almost two years of being without a home, Cinema
Knife Fight, the horror movie review column I
co-write with Michael Arruda, has finally returned!! Its new home is
a brand new horror-themed website called FEAR
ZONE which promises to be a pretty big deal. It's run by
Greg Lamberson and features a staff which includes myself and several
other horror writers, as well as experts on music, video games - the
whole spectrum of horror in the media. The site will have new content
every day, and I think FEAR ZONE is going to be a hit. Already
everyone I've told about it has loved it.
The
first new Cinema Knife Fight column (reviewing Rob Zombie's remake
of HALLOWEEN) was one of the first articles to go up when the
site launched three weeks ago. And if you'd like to go directly to CKF,
just go
here.
In
the future, there will be the monthly Cinema Knife Fight column, reviewing
movies currently in theaters, as well as possibly DVD Knife Fight and
other variations on the tried and true formula. I will also be writing
some solo columns, including reviews of comic books and the genre-themed
shows of the new television season.
So
keep checking FEAR ZONE for lots of good content!
COVER OF DARKNESS (out now!)
Well,
the anthology COVER OF DARKNESS came out this month from Sam's
Dot Publishing. It features my story, "Sometimes the Good Witch
Signs to Me," which is actually the very first horror short story
I ever wrote. If you'd like to get a copy of the anthology, you can
order it here.

CINEMA KNIFE FIGHT ARCHIVES UPDATED
A few
people mentioned to me that the Archives on this site for the column
CINEMA KNIFE FIGHT, which I wrote
with Michael Arruda from 2004 to 2006, were incomplete. Well, that has
been corrected. The final three columns from 2006 have been posted and
are available now. These include reviews of the movies: HOSTEL,
FINAL DESTINATION 3 and the 2006 remake of THE HILLS HAVE
EYES. These columns were originally published in the horror industry
newsletter HELLNOTES.
I'm
sad that CKF hasn't found a new
home yet, but in the meantime, all twenty-one installments of the original
movie review column are now available on this site. Check them out if
you're into honest horror movie reviews with a sense of humor. I have
even added a new coda after the final column.

HALLOWEEN INTERVEW IN THE NEW
BEDFORD STANDARD-TIMES
I grew
up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. While I left town as soon as I was
able to go to college, it was kind of cool to get contacted by Tim
Weisberg at the New Bedford STANDARD-TIMES newspaper this
week for a Halloween-themed article about fear.
Tim
wrote a great article, and it's nice to be a part of it. And it's a
bit of a thrill to be finally mentioned in my hometown paper. If you'd
like the check out this article, just go to the following link, it appeared
in the Sunday paper, October 29, 2006, which also happens to be my birthday.
Weird coincidence, huh?
Here's
the article, called "The
Thrill of the Chill"
And
a big Happy Halloween to you all.

PENNY DREADFUL - NEW TV INTERVIEW
I
recently was interviewed by the delightful horror movie hostess PENNY
DREADFUL. She is doing a new special/documentary about old horror movie
hosts and basically she just let the camera roll while I reminisced
about the horror hosts of my youth, including The Ghoul and Simon's
Sanctorum.
There's
a chance this might even be submitted to some film festivals.
It
was a real pleasure to meet Penny (and her cool camerawoman Rebecca),
who hosts her show on cable-access stations throughout Massachusetts
(if you live in the state, check out your local station for the show).
In
addition to the horror host stuff, they also filmed a bit of me in the
ape mask as my alter ego Cornelius Badmonk. As usual, Cornelius gets
a chance to insult people. Penny's show features a cast of characters
(she's a witch, there's also Garou, a werewolf and vampire hunter Manfred
Von Bulow), and supposedly Cornelius's segment will appear in a future
episode that shows an ape-related movie.
More
on both the documentary and the Cornelius segment when I find more.

NEW MOVIE REVIEW GIG
I
recently got a new gig writing movie reviews for a horror movie website
out of Australia called DVD
RESURRECTIONS. It's a very cool place and you should
definitely check it out if you're into horror movies. My first review
for them just went online last week and it's for a movie called PRAEY.
Here's
the link. More reviews to come.
In
other review news, Michael Arruda and I haven't found a new home for
CINEMA KNIFE FIGHT yet, although we've been looking around.
Hopefully we'll have some news in the near future about the column making
a comeback. If so, you'll read about it here.

Update on Creature Double Feature
Well,
they interviewed me for about 20 minutes, but only 2 minutes made it
into the final news segement. Oh well, that wasn't really a surprise,
and at least it was an interesting experience.
It
turns out that Creature Double Feature was just a one-time thing. Although
it may return in the fall.

THE
RETURN OF CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE
Channel
56 in Boston is bringing back their CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE show after
like three decades! It will be airing on June 24th from noon to 4pm.
So if you feel nostalgic for the old "creature feature" movie
shows, this is right up your alley. Nobody else is doing this anymore
- not even cable.
The
first two movies they're showing are "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster"
and "The Giant Gila Monster." And local celebrity and car
dealer Ernie Boch will be hosting - dressed as The Ghoul.
I've
been pretty excited about the news myself, since I watched the original
CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE show as a kid. I've been in touch with people
at WB 56 (as the channel is now called) and they interviewed me for
a press release that will be coming out this week (hopefully in the
Boston papers). It mentions me, this website, and has a quote by me.
I
was also contacted by Channel 56's news department. They just interviewed
me for a news segment. Pretty cool! My segment airs tomorrow (Thursday)
June 22 during the Ten O'Clock news. So if you get WLVI-56 (or WB56)
check it out!
