LL SOARES NEWS

Good News for LIFE RAGE

My debut novel, LIFE RAGE, published by Nightscape Press, has made it to the final ballot for the Bram Stoker Award in the category "Superior Achievement in a First Novel." The Stoker Awards, presented by the Horror Writers Assocation (HWA) will be this June in New Orleans. This makes me a 2-time Stoker Finalist. But I'm really hoping this one's a Winner.

"Seeds" - New Story in ZIPPERED FLESH 2

My story "Sawbones" in the first ZIPPERED FLESH anthology seemed to go over pretty well, so even though I don't write as many short stories as I used to, I made sure to write something for ZIPPERED FLESH 2. The new story is called "Seeds." Once again, ZF2 is edited by Weldon Burge and comes to us courtesy of Smart Rhino Publications.

EPITAPHS - AVAILABLE NOW

On the weekend of November 11 - 13, 2011, Shroud Publishing held its first ever AnthoCON in Portland, New Hampshire. The main purpose of the convention, aside from a fun time and a chance to meet some great authors, was the unveiling of the first ever New England Horror Writers (NEHW) anthology, EPITAPHS, which just happens to include my story, "Holiday House." On Saturday, November 12th, some of the authors featured in the book read from their stories, and there was a group signing afterwards.

I was a founding member of the NEHW (back then, we were the New England Chapter of the HWA) way back in 2001, and some people may remember I was also a co-chair (with Dan Keohane) of the org for three years. From the first day of the organization, I have been pushing for an anthology of stories by members. It took 10 years, but it's finally a reality! Thank you to Tracy Carbone (who edited it), Dan, Tim Deal (who published it), and everyone else who made this happen.

100 copies were printed for the convention, and all of them sold out at the event. But now there are finally more copies available. You can get yours via Amazon.

Everyone involved did a great job on this one. It's a great collection, and I'm happy to be in it.

LIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT

Stories Inspired by Metal and Hard Rock Bands - Edited by David T. Wilbanks and Craig Clarke

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HEAVY MUSIC INSPIRES DARK FICTION?

Living After Midnight: Hard and Heavy Stories consists of six horror and dark-fantasy stories inspired by some of the greatest hard-rock and heavy-metal bands in that music’s long and influential history. Each author was invited to submit a short story or novella inspired by the band of his choice.

You're sure to be impressed by the half-dozen diverse tales they came up with. The set list is as follows: “Spooky Tooth” by Randy Chandler, “Iron Maiden” by Matthew Fryer, “Black Sabbath” by Steven L. Shrewsbury, “Judas Priest” by David T. Wilbanks, “Motorhead” by Kent Gowran, and “Slayer” by L.L. Soares.

An original lineup indeed. You’ll not want to pass up the chance to read six of the sharpest, savviest, hardest, and heaviest stories published this year.

Available now in ebook format only, including formats for the Amazon Kindle and the Nook.

IN SICKNESS Coming in 2010

Horror Writer L.L. Soares, has just announced that SKULLVINES PRESS will be publishing the short story collection IN SICKNESS, due out in 2010. A joint collection between Soares and his wife, author Laura Cooney, IN SICKNESS is made up of three sections: solo stories by Cooney, stories by Soares, and a 12k novella entitled "In Sickness," written by Cooney and Soares in collaboration.

This collection of very dark tales includes three stories that received Honorable Mentions in past editions of THE YEAR'S BEST FANTASY AND HORROR, and is made up of previously published stories, as well as several new ones which will be published for the first time in this edition.

Like Bonnie and Clyde armed with words instead of guns, they'll take you on a very wild journey indeed.

At this time, everyone involved would also like to unveil a draft of the upcoming cover, using the art of painter Valerie Kahn-Dorato.

Cooney and Soares are very excited to be working with SKULLVINES PRESS to make this book a reality. More news is forthcoming as we approach the publication date.

Cinema Knife Fight RETURNS!

After almost two years of being without a home, Cinema Knife Fight, the horror movie review column LL co-writes with Michael Arruda, has finally returned!! Its new home is a brand new horror-themed website called FEAR ZONE which promises to be a pretty big deal. It's run by Greg Lamberson and features a staff which includes LL, Michael and several other horror writers, as well as experts on music, video games - the whole spectrum of horror in the media. The site will have new content every day, and we think FEAR ZONE is going to be a hit.

The first new Cinema Knife Fight column (reviewing Rob Zombie's remake of HALLOWEEN) was one of the first articles to go up when the site launched three weeks ago. And if you'd like to go directly to CKF, just go here.

In the future, there will be the monthly Cinema Knife Fight column, reviewing movies currently in theaters, as well as possibly DVD Knife Fight and other variations on the tried and true formula. LL will also be writing some solo columns, including reviews of comic books and the genre-themed shows of the new television season.

So keep checking FEAR ZONE for lots of good content!

HALLOWEEN INTERVEW IN THE NEW BEDFORD STANDARD-TIMES

LL grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. While he left town as soon as he was able to go to college, it was kind of cool to get contacted by Tim Weisberg at the New Bedford STANDARD-TIMES newspaper this week for a Halloween-themed article about fear:

"Tim wrote a great article, and it's nice to be a part of it. And it's a bit of a thrill to be finally mentioned in my hometown paper. If you'd like the check out this article, just go to the following link, it appeared in the Sunday paper, October 29, 2006, which also happens to be my birthday. Weird coincidence, huh?"

Here's the article, called "The Thrill of the Chill"

And a big Happy Halloween to you all.

PENNY DREADFUL - NEW TV INTERVIEW

LL was recently interviewed by the delightful horror movie hostess PENNY DREADFUL. She is doing a new special/documentary about old horror movie hosts and basically she just let the camera roll while LL reminisced about the horror hosts of his youth, including The Ghoul and Simon's Sanctorum.

There's a chance this might even be submitted to some film festivals.

It was a real pleasure to meet Penny (and her cool camerawoman Rebecca), who hosts her show on cable-access stations throughout Massachusetts (if you live in the state, check out your local station for the show).

In addition to the horror host stuff, they also filmed a bit of LL in the ape mask as his alter ego Cornelius Badmonk. As usual, Cornelius gets a chance to insult people. Penny's show features a cast of characters (she's a witch, there's also Garou, a werewolf and vampire hunter Manfred Von Bulow), and supposedly Cornelius's segment will appear in a future episode that shows an ape-related movie.

More on both the documentary and the Cornelius segment when we find out more.
