Welcome!

Hi, I'm Lucy A. Snyder. Thanks for visiting my little corner of the Web! I write nonfiction, humor, poetry, and fiction.

Installing Linux on a Dead Badger Sparks and Shadows

A Little About My Writing

I'm the author of a trilogy of novels that are set be published by Del Rey starting in 2009; the first book in the series is entitled Spellbent.

I'm also the author of Sparks and Shadows, a cross-genre short story collection from HW Press. It won the 2008 Editors' Choice Black Quill Award for Best Dark Genre Collection. My humor collection Installing Linux on a Dead Badger (And Other Oddities) came out in October 2007, and my poetry collection Chimeric Machines will be coming out in late 2008.

My fiction goes all over the road, although I do tend to write genre stories (science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc.) more often than straightforward mainstream fiction.

I write a column for Horror World on science and technology for writers, and I also contribute to Storytellers Unplugged. To date, I've made over 80 short fiction sales, over 50 poetry sales, and I've sold a bunch of nonfiction on topics ranging from faeries to medicinal botany to ethernet switches. (Why the focus on sales?)

If you'd like to see the whole list of my publications, take a look at my bibliography.

The story that's gained the most attention is probably "Installing Linux on a Dead Badger: User's Notes". There are other stories related to it:

DE Christman illustrated several of the stories, and you can see his work in the header graphic of this website.

A Little About Me

I live in Worthington, Ohio with my husband (author Gary A. Braunbeck) and a pack of cats. We'd happily keep dogs and ferrets and sundry other critters but the cats voted against it.

I have a BS in biology and a Master's degree in journalism. Along the way I also studied judo and hapkido, gave bassoon lessons, and played saxophone in a jazz band. These days, I'm either writing or helping people with their computers.

I'm a graduate of the Clarion workshop and I'm co-founder of Writeshop. For several years I've directed the Context Writing Workshops.

I've also worked on the publishing end of things. For about 7 years, I published Dark Planet; I also served as an editor for the prozines Strange Horizons and HMS Beagle.

In my former life as managing editor for IU's BioTech project, I created Cyberbotanica, a resource on plants used in cancer treatment. Yes, it's in dire need of updates, but I no longer have access to their server.

If you'd like to learn more about me, take a look at my biography or read through some of my interviews.
