Week Five

Okay, what's a Dare? It's a challenge for writers to produce a lot of material in a relatively short period of time. Previous Dares have been one month or three months in length, with the same result: the first draft of a book.

Check out the other Dare writers:

Camille LaGuire, Derek James, Kelly Searsmith, Lyda Morehouse, Rebecca Maines, Sarah Stegall, and T.M. Spell.

Just a quick entry to let you know I survived my second trip to California in three months. San Francisco seems to be a cool city, though all I really saw of it was in the dark. I stayed next to the Bay Bridge, which is an impressive structure, and really made me appreciate William Gibson's books set in the future that take place on the Bridge, taken over by the homeless. I imagined, as I was driving in the lower section, pieces of plywood screwed to the steel framework as people built their homes on it. I may have to read those books again, at least skim Virtual Light and All Tomorrow's Parties.

Speaking of books, I finally finished Tim Powers' book, Last Call. Great book. It was never really boring, it just took a while to read. You can't skim his stuff, there's so much detail and great eyeball kicks and deft characterization. He juggles almost a dozen characters with ease. And the ending was perfect. He makes me realize I have a long, long way to go as a writer.

And on that note, I have to admit I didn't get much writing done on my trip, nor since I've been back. I had a reading Wednesday night that was sort of fun, sort of painful (I was tired). My laptop's screen was too big to open all the way, and of course I kept getting stuck behind people with their seats pushed back in my face to start with. And I was too preoccupied with work stuff to get any real writing done, unfortunately. So much for the great Dare of 2000, at least for me!

Hello. I'm getting ready to go to California, so I may not have any updates, though I plan on writing a good deal. So look for some entries on Thursday, unless I manage to get online while I'm out there. Take care.
