The 1/24/30 Dare

In the immortal words of Austin Powers, "...And I'm spent!"

The Last of the Hand is done. Weighing in at almost 300 pages and over 80,000 words, I finished the final edits and revisions just this morning. I'm off to the Post Office now to ship it off to the publisher. And then I'm gonna take a break!

Actually, the scary thing is that I'm already looking forward to my next novel. I want to do a historical baseball fantasy, dealing with the Negro Leagues and the South. Should be fun. If I have the time and energy tonight I plan on starting the "research" by starting Michael Bishop's Brittle Innings.

And there's also a story contest I may try to enter, though the deadline is Friday (for me). I just never ends, huh? I guess that's a good thing, right?

But for now, let's celebrate my novel being DONE!!! Later.

The 1/24/30 Dare

I just about have this monster done... I spent pretty much all day working on it, adding another 4,000 words or so, and now I'm pretty much all caught up. Except for the final chapter.

Right now it's about 6 pages, and it is rough. You can really tell I was in a hurry to get it done. A lot of action is taking place, and little of it really makes sense! So that's my goal for today. Get it finished. Print out what I've got. Get it ready to go out in the mail first thing tomorrow a.m.

And then rest for a while, away from the computer.

Actually, I have a couple stories to get back into circulation, so I may piddle around with them this week and next. And just relax, maybe read some stories (I need to read Steve and Melanie Tem's story, "The Man on the Ceiling, as recommended by Tim), and read King and Straub's "Black House" for some fun diversionary reading.

In other news, we're off to Chicagon on Saturday for my college buddy Cathi's wedding! That is, as long as our flights haven't been totally messed up by recent events. I chatted with Cathi this weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing her and meeting her hubby-to-be at last. Flying doesn't really worry me all that much. Security is going to be so tight, I can't really foresee any issues. And if anyone does try to hijack the plane, something tells me they're going to have more than a little resistance. Later.

The 1/24/30 Dare

Not a whole lot to report for today. Just read over the printout of the last 70 pages of the book, making notes on places to expand and clarify the text.

I think I'll spend most of the day tomorrow working on this bad boy. It's about 10 p.m. and I want to hang out with Elizabeth and not be stressed about this anymore. It's a struggle between the perfectionist in me and the part of me that just wants to be done! It's a very strange feeling. ;)

We had a nice breakfast this morning with the "Craige Girls" -- our friends from Lizzie's college days. We have very cool, very smart, very fun friends. Clarke had read the first 200 pages of my novel, having single-spaced it and printed it on both sides of the page, like a Real Book, and she made some nice catches on some typos (she also lent us a tape of the Tenacious D shows from HBO -- if you haven't seen these 2 guys, you need to; it's two guys, including Jack Black from "High Fidelity" who play guitars at local open-mikes and think they're "the Greatest Band in History." It's quite surreal and hilarious!). Holly and Val shared their hilarious P.A. patient stories, while Tammy talked about life as a lawyer, Lindsay talked about life as a law student, and Cammie did the same for the Art History program. What's funny is that at these get-togethers, Lizzie and I never really get a chance to hear what the other is talking about. We had a great breakfast at Elmo's in Chapel Hill, until the waitress asked us to leave...

Talk to you tomorrow, after I FINISH MY NOVEL!!!

The 1/24/30 Dare

Okay, most of the heavy lifting is pretty much done on my novel. I've got all the pieces in place, all the chapters drafted, all the people in the right place at the right time. Now I need to beef up what I've got with some more character development and descriptions, more cool details, and I'll be done. I've really got to focus on the last 50 pages. I'd love to expand them to 75 pages total, giving me an even 300 pages, double-spaced. Can I do it over the weekend and still get it in the mail first thing Monday? Maybe. I plan on it.

As for today, I don't think I can squeeze much more out. I'm gonna print out those pesky last 50 pages and go over them with a pen tomorrow, noting places where I can expand and develop the scenes more. It should be better than the sometimes-drudgery of today's wordage.

I feel pretty good about it. I want to feel awesome about it, but that's gonna take more work and time. I may have to do with "pretty good," I'm afraid. Maybe "damn good."

In other news, I got a couple rejections in the past week or so that I'd like to pick up and get back out. I probably won't get to them 'til next week, but I do want to keep my stories out there. I'm starting to look forward to writing some more stories in the weeks ahead. I've got a lot of fine story collections to read, and I also want to start reading my stack of Tim Powers books.

I also want to read some baseball novels to get me thinking about my next novel...

It never ends, it really doesn't! I'm just finishing one project, and I'm already jonesin' for more work! Ah well, it could be worse, right? I could be all bent out of shape about the new fall lineup on TV, y'know? Have a good weekend. Later.

The 1/24/30 Dare

Yowza. It's about 11:30 p.m., and I just finished stitching together the draft of the last few chapters of my novel! I have to add lots of details to the last two chapters, along with the Epilogue, but it's all pretty much there! Wahoo!

I definitely think I'll get it done by Saturday, so I can reread all day Sunday, and get it outta here on Monday. Very cool.

Not much else to report, really. It's just a matter of keeping my nose to the grindstone in the next 2 days and fleshing out all the details of my last few chapters. Adding more description. Fixing all logic lapses (yep, there may be some of them, believe it!). Tweaking and tweaking.

And that'll be it. Hopefully I won't be all burnt out from finishing this up that I won't write again for a while. I've totally gotten out of my regular schedule of writing, and gotten used to writing at night! Hrm. I seem to get more done at night, but I also end up staying up way too late! Plus I miss spending time with Lizzie. She understands that this is a temporary thing, luckily! I wouldn't have gotten anything done without her support. And now I'm off to bed. Later!

Stretching for the final mile...

Today's Quote:

Aim for the hay, she thought, holding her arms out. She grabbed the loose ends of her unzipped coat and held them out like a parachute, and she slowed a fraction more. The ground approached way too fast, and Kelley hit a five foot high bale of hay with a remarkable lack of grace.

The 1/24/30 Dare

So here's the deal for today. Before I can go to bed tonight, I need a big chunk of words OR a very skeletal draft of the remaining chapters of the novel. Whichever comes first. I've been dragging my feet for way too long on this last section, and I really, really need to just finish it so I can start some serious revising. I have some concerns about the motivation of a couple characters, especially my "villain," Dr. Azure. He needs a little more tweaking, I think.

I've got a pot of coffee brewed, my laptop's set up on the back deck, and there's a stack of Pearl Jam CDs handy to keep me going. I'll talk more later, when I get this done. Or at least halfway, on my mid-point break. Later...

8:15 p.m.:

I'm back inside, a couple mosquito bites later, and I've got about 4,600 words to go. Not bad. I'm getting into it and really enjoying this wild approach to drafting. Usually I'm much more thorough, but I'm throwing thoroughness out the door in favor of wordage and progress. Ask me how I feel about this at about midnight today... Right now I'm sorta having fun. Later!

10:20 p.m.

Okay, forget about midnight. I've about maxed out my writing ability for the day. I didn't make my super-high word count, but I did manage a good amount. I have only 5 chapters left to flesh out and revise. I'm getting closer! I may be able to wrap this up by Saturday.

I figure I'll print the whole thing out Saturday (or Friday if I get done early -- I never said I wasn't above wishful thinking!) and reread the whole shebang on Sunday and make sure everything's perfect. Then Monday it's off to the PO. I feel very good about it. Later.

Over the wall...

Today's Quote:

Alexander stood guard over the old man while Kelley looked at a random selection of the books in the shelves around the attic. While some were typed and others were handwritten, the contents of every single book were the same. They matched the small white book the old man had given her. Word for word. Kelley hoped the poor, pathetic man sitting in the chair would never hear about computers and all the time and effort he could have saved with one. He didn’t look like he was the type to keep up with new technology. Maybe he liked it that way.

The 1/24/30 Dare

Just a quick update to let you know that I'm still plugging away. I finally got over my lethargy from yesterday -- not sure what caused that, other than a ton of negative emotions from the past week -- and got some more stuff done today that builds on what I did late, late last night. Kelley's scene with the gum-chewing old man is finally done!

It's weird how some scenes seem to really suck the energy out of me, while others I can't wait to write. Like the next chapter, when I get to do the last flashback of the entire book, the most crucial bit of history that I've been alluding to the entire novel. Without giving too much away, it has to do with old colleagues of Archie's, Stonehenge, the green magic of the Fist, and yes, even crop circles!

A quick tangent: I just read today that "Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan's next movie deals with crop circles as well, so we gotta rush this book into publication soon so no one thinks I'm copying off him!

Fun stuff, and I can't wait to write some more tonight. I found some cool research on Stonehenge and the Druids that once hung out there, and check out the awesome picture I found:

Stonehenge as a storm brews above it...
(from a really wacky website called Technoshamanism).

The rest of the book is just like a set of dominoes. I've got everything and everyone all in place, now I get to putting them in motion, one by one. I'll let you know how it goes... Later!

Hitting the wall...

Today's Quote:

The white dragon worked his way to his feet, but when he couldn't lift his taped-up wings, he sank back down to the bottom of the cage. He gave a long sigh and kicked a petrified piece of birdseed with a clawed foot.

"Alexander, get your head up," Kelley said. Just what I need right now, she thought, a dragon suffering from low self-esteem. "Show me what you're made of. Show me your fire."

The 1/24/30 Dare

Oh crap I'm tired. It's 11:30 p.m., and it took me FOREVER to get started tonight. I guess it's a case of burnout. I've been working pretty darn hard on this novel. So I was farting around most of the night, surfing instead of writing, trying to find some journals or something to read, anything to procrastinate.

Finally, around 10 p.m. I got going. Only to have my computer crash. Twice. Just totally locked up. Probably because I had 5-7 windows open -- Word, Internet Explorer, CD Player, Outlook, Textpad, and so on -- so I can multi-task, you know? I'm used to do that at work, where my computer has more RAM to handle it. Not this bad boy. I knocked the wind out of it twice, poor fella.

The first time it went down I lost about a page of stuff. I about quit right then and there, but I sucked it up and kept going. I just about have the chapter finished, and I promised myself a gift if I got it done tonight (that's how desperate I've become!)

So I'm gonna go to Amazon.com and see if I can find a hardcover 1st Edition of Brittle Innings by Michael Bishop for next month's con. I'd love to read it and get him to sign it then (this novel is about baseball in the past, and I have a novel idea for similar settings). And once I finish the novel I'm treating myself to the new Stephen King/Peter Straub novel. Then I'm not buying any more books! Got way too many to read, including a passel of Tim Powers novels crowded together on my bookshelf.

But I digress.

I got to do more nifty dragon stuff tonight with chapter 31, as Kelley escapes the gum-chewing man. It's coming together quite nicely, even if it's taking some doing lately.

Belated thanks to my sister Shelly for her sweet comments in her latest e-mail. It's always good to hear and read stuff like that! I'm glad I can be an inspiration, in my own offbeat way! Thanks also to Julie (check out her cool story about heroes at Aphelion!) for her excellent, excellent comments on my first chunk of the novel. Any and all feedback and cheering on keeps me going, even when it's late and my eyes are tired and I really need to be in bed...

Now there's an idea! See ya later...
