This is it, the last day of December, the last day of the year 2001. I cannot believe this year is OVER already! Crazy.
2001 was a really good year for me as a writer, even if I didn't get a ton of stories accepted, though I did get paid for a lot of past pubs, which always helps. I started to really hit my stride in the novel-writing arena, and I'm really excited about my novel plans for next year. And I even improved my total wordage for the year, barely beating last year's total (just for kicks, you can compare 2001's accomplishments with those of 2000).
Here's what I've done, writing-wise this year:
- Finished an urban fantasy novel, The Last of the Hand
- Revised Autumn's Fall, a collaborative horror novel
- Drafted the first 25,000 words of The Ghetto Dwellers, a fantasy/SF novel
-
Wrote "Black Angels," a horror/fantasy story
- Wrote "Visions of Suburban Bliss," a horror story
- Wrote "Coal Ash and Sparrows," an urban fantasy story
- Wrote "Video Nasties," a collaborative horror story
- Wrote "An Outrider's Tale," a fantasy story
- Wrote "A Ghetto Celebration," a fantasy/SF story
- Wrote "The Disillusionist," a horror story
I've gotten some more stories published, and some more were accepted. The biggest acceptance was at Asimov's back in April, and I'm still waiting for that one to see print! But I ain't complaining. I'm still riding high on that accomplishment, and I continue to send more stuff their way (right now I have 11 stories out to major publishers).
I also had two very big nibbles on my urban fantasy novel, The Last of the Hand, which really tickles me because that's the first story I ever started playing with almost 10 years, with the intention of writing the kind of story I would want to read. One of the editors at DAW Publishing asked for the entire manuscript (which forced me to FINISH the durn thing!), and when they couldn't take it, I got an email from a top agent a week later who wanted to readed the book. I'm still waiting to hear back from the agent, fingers crossed.
I got a little burned out in November, trying to write an entire novel in a month, and I took nearly a month off to get over it. Then I jammed out one story and most of a secone one, in about a week's time. I'm baack! And I feel primed for all the fun stuff I'll be doing next year.
And you know what? I just know 2002 will be even better. Happy new year.
