July 11

as transcribed from my journal

The beach here at Kizkalesi is crowded, like in all the pictures of Mediterranean beaches. There's an island with a castle just off-shore. Very picturesque. Other than that (and heaven and hell, of course) the place seems a bit of a pit with nothing much else to recommend it.

Then we had a longish drive to the airport in Adana, driving through Tarsis, which made it clear why Saul/Paul got the heck out of there. (Hot, human, flat, unattractive.) Traffic wasn't too heavy but nasty enough with all the cars doing the Turkish thing of making up lanes as they go along. We arrived at the airport just in time for the car rental guy who was waiting there--we hadn't realized there wasn't a rental agency at the airport and the guy came in from town to get the car.

We had a long wait in the airport so we spent it in the restaurant just talking. This was actually one of my favourite times of the trip--just relaxing and talking with nowhere to go and nothing to see for a while. I love intense talks with friends.

The flight to Istanbul was fairly short and the airplane was nice and spacious--made me wish that our trans-Atlantic flight was so generous and the planes so well taken care of.

My journal craps out here, so from here on I'm reconstructing with my memory, using Jim's journal as a prompt.

Arrived at Marsha's late afternoon. Took a taxi to her apartment; she prepared a wonderful dinner for us. Istanbul didn't seem so hot or humid after our time in the Mediterranean.
