Food:
- Hot and Sour Soup
- One of my most prized recipes. Years ago, I sat down with a stack of ingredients,
a stack of various recipes that claimed to make Hot and Sour Soup, and a weekend.
This recipe is the result. The soup itself is sour and complexly flavored, with
the heat (coming from peppercorns, not chile peppers) taking time to build. This
recipe calls for a few exotic ingredients, they are crucial to the flavor. I make
no promises as to what happens if you substitute...
- Citrus Fusion Marinade
- This is a general purpose Eurasian fusion marinade which works well with poultry and pork, and produces a rich and elegant sauce. As usual, it calls for some fairly exotic ingredients.
- NeoVietnamese Ginger Chicken
- This is a "NeoVietnamese" take on a traditional Vietnamese dish. And yes, as usual, it includes hard to find ingredients. Who knew you'd get ingredients at the pharamcy...
- Chicken and Dried Fruit Curry
- This is an original (and mild) curry, based on traditional Indian spices, and made with chicken, onions, and fruit. It calls for ingredients you will almost certainly only find in an Indian grocery store.

- An easy recipe for shoulder roast of lamb in a cranberry-chipotle sauce.
Drink:
The Perfect Whiskey Sour
This actually is the recipe for a sour mix; you could use other alcohols to create
whatever sort of sour you want. It relies on only one exotic ingredient, the concentrated
extract of the sour (and alkaline) Ume plum. This lets you get a nice sour drink
without suffering from instant heartburn...
