The artist isn't a special
kind of person, but every person is a special kind of artist. The one
bit of artistry that eeryone shares is storytelling. We are all
storytellers,
but each in his own way. My stories are told in wood and stone, in poetry
and prose, and through standup storytelling. My Old Fart's guide is a
diary of sorts, which I hope will offer some help as we seek to follow
the story of our lives.

"The
thing is, when you catch the fish you have quantified the experience, it was
x inches long or weighed x pounds, and so someone out there can always catch
a longer, bigger fish. The fish that got away on the other hand, is unquantified,
it is a part of the great mystery. No one can claim to have caught a bigger
fish, because the size of the one that got away is unknown. If your intent is
to eat the fish, then losing the fish can surely be disappointing, if instead
you consider that in the moments when there was a fish on one end of the line
and you on the other, that you were in touch with the mystery. In that time
you were better fed than had you caught and ate the fish."
