My Interests

  • Science fiction (of course) Favorite authors include Christopher Moore, Jasper fforde, James Morrow, Tim Powers, Samuel R. Delany, Terry Pratchett, John Barth, Neil Gaiman, Octavia Butler, Ken Grimwood, and a buncha others. My favorite science fiction/fantasy TV shows are Red Dwarf, Dr. Who, the Outer Limits, Alien Nation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Babylon 5.
  • Movies. I love movies. My favorites include Singin' in the Rain, Citizen Kane, E.T., Miracle on 34th Street and anything by Woody Allen, Robert Altman, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Charlie Chaplin, or Buster Keaton. And no fan of films can afford to overlook the Internet Movie Database.
  • Music. I like progressive rock, especially 70s progressive rock, which was when I cut my musical teeth (ask me to play them some time). Favorite groups include The Bonzo Dog Band, The Who, the Beatles, the Talking Heads, Lyle Lovett, and the Capitol Steps. I also love Broadway musicals, especially from the 50s and 60s.
  • New York Mets.  I've been a Mets fan for over40 years, with many great memories (1969, 1973, 1986) and many lousy ones (most other years).  My two favorite Mets Blogs are Mike's Mets (I always find his commentary right on the mark) and Always Amazin' (also some very good comments).  For thoroughness, there's Metsblog. For news about the team (and about any major league team in the major sports), I really like Sportspyder, which gathers together all the stories on all the teams.  And the best Mets discussion Bulletin Board is the Crane Pool Forum (any true Mets fan will understand why it's called that).

Science Fiction Stuff

Albacon is the Capital Region's well-regarded science fiction convention.  I'm there every year, and you'll have a great time at one of the best small cons on the east coast.

The Internet Speculative Fiction Database is an excellent listing of short stories and novels. You know it has to be pretty complete, since it had some of my stories in it when I first found it (and, of course, added a few more).

The Locus Books Received Database is even better; it has publications of mine I had forgotten I'd written, plus some of Susan's poems.

For information on writing SF professionally, visit the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America page. It includes links to SFWA members who have web pages, so you can search out your favorite author. It also includes information for the beginning writer, including from an SF author that I'm too modest to mention by name.

The Straight Dope. Cecil Adams fights against ignorance. Look for me on the message board as "RealityChuck."

Thinking of becoming a big time science fiction writer and earn big money?  Oh, well, if you insist, the Critter's Workshop is the place to get honest critiques of your work.

Red Mike's Reviews. Jim Macdonald, in addition to being a fine writer of fiction, reviews what's truly bad in recent films and books.

Wallace & GromitLike every right-thinking life form on Earth (or the moon), I'm a big fan of Wallace and Gromit.
