The Newsgroup

My newsgroup is a place to hang out, chat, get updates about goings on, and the like. Basically a smaller-scale version of Julie Czerneda's newsgroup, because a) I enjoy it, and b) I'm used to it. No hard and fast rules, but please keep it civil. I don't like fish, so salmon puffs are out, but I'm not above using cheese puffs when the topic gets out of control. The principle behind the puffs is that if you're trying to eat a rich, gooey food, you'll be too occupied to continue the conversation. If I do pull out the cheese puffs, please respect that I'm no longer comfortable with the topic in my forum, and kindly continue the discussion off list. Other than that, knock yourself out.

There are two ways to access the newsgroup:

Web Interface

Pretty simple, messages are listed chronologically. Click here for the web interface.

Newsreader Interface

I much prefer this method, because the topics are threaded and it highlights new messages, but it's a little more involved.

If you're already reading an sff.net newsgroup through your reader, all you have to do is list the newsgroups and look for sff.people.sarah-jane. If this is your first time accessing news.sff.net, you'll need to change some settings. This is to combat spam, and it's really not as hard as it looks to set this up.

The following instructions are for Outlook Express, but the principle should be the same for whatever reader you're using.

  • Click Here to open the newsgroup in your default reader. You'll get an error message telling you the reader is unable to connect to the server.
  • You'll need to change the port settings. In Outlook, go to Tools>Accounts.
  • Select the "News" tab.
  • Select "news.sff.net" and click "Properties".
  • Select the "Advanced" tab.
  • Change "119" to "1119".
  • Click "OK".
  • Click "Close".
  • Select the "headers" icon to download the headers from the newsgroup.

And you're done! Hope to see you there!

Cheers!

~Sarah
