The Author Says:
FOOL’S WAR is, so far, the only novel I’ve written based on one of my short stories. “Fool’s Errand” is also the story of mine which has been republished the most. Needless to say the continued enthusiastic reception of both the story and the novel is a source of great pride for me.
I wrote “Fool’s Errand” during the Persian Gulf war. While I was working on the story, I was hearing the news of Muslims in Detroit and elsewhere in the country being assaulted and harassed because of their religion. As a result, I added a Muslim woman to the cast of “Fool’s Errand.” This was my small attempt to speak out against sterotyping and intolerance which I saw as running rampant at that time.
Then came 9/11 and things got so much worse.
I am glad I wrote FOOL’S WAR. I am glad Katmir al Shei is out there as a positive character. I am sorry she’s standing so much alone in the world of SF.
