“Sarah Zettel is a very good writer. She writes classic SF with great ideas and good characters and puts them in exciting situations. I was quite out of breath by the time I finished reading this book.”

The Author Says:
I got the title KINGDOM OF CAGES from a wonderful folk song about driving across Wyoming. The verse describes songbirds rising up in their great flocks from the tall grasses; “they soar from their earthly bound kingdom of cages.” This was exactly the feeling I wanted for my first story with adolescent protagonists.
You need to be careful with titles though. They will effect the book. When I started out, I had no idea how important all those birds were going to become to my heroine, and my world’s, eventual outcome.
P.S. The cover is by famed SF artist Micheal Whelan, and remains one of my absolute favorites. It’s relationship to the plot is purely metaphorical, but it’s a very good metaphor.
