- Born in St. Louis, only child of two painters. Family soon moves to New York area, vacationing in artist's colony at Ogunquit Maine.
- 1930-1944
- Works at nautical design in Maine and New York, works for Boeing Aeronautics, studies engineering at U. Michigan. Considers becoming a lobsterman but decides not to.
- 1944-1945
- Trains as pilot, serves in U.S. airforce, European theater. Wins purple heart.
- 1946-47
- Recovers in Mexico. Decides to become an artist.
- 1947-50
- Moves to Ogunquit, Maine full time. Studies painting with father "Gustav" William von Schlegell.
