Susan answering questions from the Willamette Writers Group

"The Willamette Writers Group meets in a beautiful old church. I've spoken in church before, but not about writing (grin). It was a lovely venue—and full of lovely people, too."

Willamette Writers Group
April 2002

In April, I was very pleased to be the guest of the Willamette Writers Group for their monthly meeting at the Old Church in Portland, Oregon. My topic was "What I learned after I published my first novel," and the short version is "I had a lot to learn, and at this point, I don't think anybody stops learning about writing as long as they continue to write, there's always something to get better at."

A quiet moment before facing the audience.

This was a first-time experience for me. I'm embarrassed to admit that I ran through the speech I'd written in about ten of the allotted fifty minutes—and this was despite prior rehearsal! I'd be surprised if anybody could actually make head or tail of what I said; I must have been talking like a 45 vinyl record being played at 33 RPM. (I guess the closest analogy in the CD age would be "talking at scan-forward speed" or something like that.) Fortunately for me, the people in the audience rescued me promptly from my embarrassing position by asking me perceptive, intelligent, interesting questions. I had a great time. Thanks for having me, ya'll!
